Cannon Challenge

If someone had told you that Discovery Communications (aka The Discovery Channel) was going to develop an iPhone app, you’d probably imagine it would involve some cool and scientifically weird use of the iPhone’s accelerometer or GPS technology or multi-touch screen. And you’d be wrong! Mostly.
Cannon Challenge does make use of the touch screen (as does pretty much everyone), but there’s no other trickery involved. It’s just a fun, well-produced game that’s far too short for its own good.
You control a big bad cannon and fire artillery at targets that are perched in various places throughout the mountainous scenery. The controls are easy: simply adjust your cannon’s elevation and velocity, and fire off round after round until you either run out of ammo or obliterate your targets and move to the next stage.
It’s a really good game and has cool sound effects including the very same whistling noise that Wile. E. Coyote hears whenever he’s about to get an Acme bomb dropped on his head. But like I mentioned earlier… it’s way too short! And on top of that it’s way too easy.
If Cannon Challenge had more difficult levels and included elements such as targets that move left-to-right (not up and down like a few helicopters you’ll encounter), and if it wasnt’ limited to just 15 stages, it would kick a lot of ass and they could probably even charge a few bucks for it.
Unfortunately the fun is very short-lived and if you have an hour of free time you’ll beat the game and be ready to delete it without a second thought. But still, I think Cannon Challenge is worth installing because blowing stuff up is cool, and if we’re lucky maybe Discovery will release updates to extend the playability.
- Discovery Channel doesn't produce crap so you know this will be good
- That cannon looks baaadassss
- Left thumb adjusts elevation, right thumb is for velocity
- (insert whistling noise here)
- An anticlimactic finish to my short-lived military career
