If you look at Cowabunga’s App Store icon and think ‘omg this game’s gonna be stupid and sickenly cute’, you’re partially right. Or mostly right. Depends on your point of view.

The debate over Cowabunga’s stupidity is, of course, directly rooted in the gameplay. Cows are jumping off a cliff into a river… maybe they’d prefer to go for a swim than be cut up into steaks? just a guess… and your job is to bounce them across the water to the safety of the opposing riverbank. Naturally it sounds really easy but when you’ve got one raft and three cows bouncing around in the air, it gets really hard really fast.

Personally, I like Cowabunga. It may not be the kind of game I’d keep around for all that long but, if nothing else, it serves as a nice distraction until you either get sick of it or save every cow on the planet from a horrible drowning death. And yes, it IS sickenly cute. The cartoon cows are cute, the bouncing action is cute, and above all the MOO! on every cow bounce is cute.

Like a lot of lightweight games, Cowabunga lacks some of the basic features that a lot of gamers swear by such as a pause button, a global high score board, and the ability to resume play after an interruption. I’d love to see these things added in, but as long as Sputnik Games is giving it away for free I guess I won’t complain! Seriously though, I hope these features become standard on all iPhone games. Hopefully it’s just a matter of time.

Cowabunga is a simple, high-quality, painfully cute game that you can install for free right now. I say go get it. Anyone who’s tried more than a handful of free apps from the App Store knows that the words “free” and “high-quality” don’t get used in the same sentence all that often. Even if you wind up rolling your eyes at Cowabunga, at least you got to hate it without paying a cent.
