I’ve always wanted to be a crook but I’m too pretty to go to jail, so I’m getting my jollies through Mafia Wars instead. Zynga’s role-playing masterpiece is already a huge hit on the social networking sites and it’s finally available on iPhone.
In Mafia Wars you do “jobs” (ie: pulling heists) for cash and experience, and as you level up in experience you get rewarded with stat points. Those stat points get spent on whatever character attributes you want to build up. You can increase your stamina which helps if you live to brawl with other players, you can build your “secret skills” which are basically extra attack/defense stats that are hidden from others, or you can do what I do which is dump all those points into energy which means you can do more jobs and earn more money. In this game, cash is king (at least it is to me!) and it goes a long way towards turning you into a powerful crimelord.
As you gain experience and cash, new doors get opened up. The array of weapons you can buy gets bigger, the list of jobs you can do grows longer, and new properties become available for you to operate. Everything’s interconnected… you need certain weapons to do certain jobs, you need to do certain jobs to earn enough to buy more expensive properties, and more expensive properties generate a bigger hourly income that you earn in realtime so that you can buy the bigger guns.
Mafia Wars is a truly social game that lets you grow your mafia family by connecting yourself to other players. See that bold text at the top of this post with Player IDs for Chrisa and me? That’s the social element of this game at work, and the bigger your family becomes the more of a badass you are in this virtual crime world.
One thing it desperately needs, though, is a leaderboard! If you’re the biggest, baddest mofo on the block, you want the world to know, right? Zynga seems to know what they’re doing, so I bet they’re working on it. It would also help if the app would respect the iPod which I’m kind of surprised it doesn’t already do.
Whether you’re already a hardened veteran from playing Mafia Wars on Facebook or completely new to this whole role-playing deal, you should give this game a try. It’s fun, addictive, and free, so “youse got nuttin’ to lose”.

Anyone encountered the problem that stats only increase while you are playing the game on phone? Mine no longer increase unless I am playing….. Never used to do this. They incresed before even while my ophn was powered off.. Help

I compared this to iMob and iMafia, and I like that in Mafia Wars you can’t buy reward points. I like that everyone is on equal footing regardless of their pocketbook.
I also prefer the menu and interface on Mafia Wars.
Just to let you know, I joined up with your mafia. I go by StonyMalone. I’m not going to post my ID anywhere, since I like to keep my Mafia just between friends. Besides, since mafia members can attack each other, I’d prefer not to let everyone know.

i enjoy the game a lot there are some things that bother me i keep getting robbed right after ive paid for property damage and to protect all properties all together it was about 40 million twice and the next hour i was robbed again;and i could not afford to protect all my property so i had to sale some why is that happening when you pay to protect your property and today i cant even get on the game the game comes up but i cant click on anything the screen just goes blanck i need help

I don’t think so, in fact I’m not sure it is even possible if the app isn’t running. I have an iPod Touch and I only notice that it requires wifi when I start and when I fight. I can actually run the app without internet, I just don’t get energy or stamina until I log in.
I don’t think any app can use internet if it isn’t open.

I see some players on level ~20 with attack and defense point values in the 1000’s. You get 5 points per level advancement…so unless I’m missing something, people are getting profile points from somewhere…

The 5 points per level can be used on anything… if you put them into energy, you can do more “jobs” which gets you more money which gets you more property which also gets you more money which gets you bigger guns!
Or you could put those points into health and stamina and fight a lot.
Either way, if you just sit around and accumulate $$$ without advancing levels, it’s possible to grow your attack/defense to big numbers.

Right now, on the fight page, I see a member at level 23 with an attack value at 2000 AND a defense value of 2000…now how is that possible?
If it’s done legitimately, no problem…but there are to many people with values way beyond the normal expected ‘progression’.

Attack/Defense isn’t tied to level… if you make a lot of money by fighting or from hourly income from property, you can buy lots and lots of weapons/armor/vehicles. Sure, maybe it’s unusual to have 2000/2000 at level 20 but it’s not impossible.

I had the same question at first. I think the numbers you are seeing are actually a cumulative score of their attack and defense plus their weapon, vehicle, and armor attack and defense and their mafia members’ weapon, vehicle, and armor attack and defense. This is why it is so important to buy weapons for your whole mafia.

I have legitimately and strategically picked my jobs, fights, property, and weapons.
Question 1:
Right now I am:
Level 17
496 attack
496 defense
23 secret attack bonus
24 secret defense bonus

101 health
16 stamina
36 mafia members – each have a car, rifles or silenced pistols, and bullet proof vest or body armor
Win = 60%
In a fight, I lose to this:
Level 14/15/16 mogul criminal or brawler
3.5M
34 attack
35 defense
? secret attack bonus
? secret defense bonus
26 energy
103 health
23 stamina
2 mafia members – fully equipped
Win = 80%
Based on known figures provided, how is it possible someone less equipped on all levels have a win ratio of 80% and always beats me. And this is for different players – mogul, crim, brawl… Only thing I could think of is that the secret attack and defense must be in the hundreds that it beats my 496 attack and 36 mafia vs 34 attack his/her 2 mafia.
Say all his/her skill points for 16 levels went to secret attack that is still only +80, that can’t beat my shown figures.
That has to be a cheat code. And isn’t it you can only gain skill points as you level up. Unless there is a code or glitch that can be capitalized…
2ND QUESTION
I ran the mafia wars update from the Apps Store and its slow, I literally have to tap the screen 5x or rub it til it responds. I know its not the iPhone because I fly through text messages. And it crashes. And after the update install there are 2 icons – old and new. I deleted the updated icon, but the original icon still launches the new version with all its glorious glitches.
How do I roll back to the original version and not lose my progress.

Can someone explain to me why I keep losing fights? My attack and defense are over 2000 each, and I keep losing to players who have 300 attack and 300 defense, and it says they had better defenses. My mafia is also larger than theirs. This didn’t used to happen to me. Now I’m losing 3 out of every 4 fights.

Same here.. I just took a screen shot. I have 501 members, and no I dont have weapons for them all, but I do have over 100 weapons, 20 armors, and 10 or so vehicles. I got beat be someone with only 3 members. My stats were way over thiers and yet I get beat every time I fight them..

My guess is it has something to do with what kind of weapons you have and what % of your mafia family are “armed”. If you have an attack score of 10,000 but it’s because you own 10,000 baseball bats, in my mind that would be a lot weaker than someone who has 100 assault rifles.
My own family used to lose a lot, but now I almost always win because I have a lot of heavy-duty weapons plus 400 pieces of body armor. My atk/def are 6000/6800 and I routinely beat people who have bigger scores than me.

This was happening to me too. I figured out that it seems to not matter what your actual attack/defense is, what matters is your secret attack/defense. I was putting all my points into energy, but when i started putting them into secret attack/defense, I started winning pretty much every fight again.

BEWARE!! Do not upgrade to the new version!
CONS: A lot slower switching between screen, regular hanging AND crashing. Annoying fight ticker tape constantly across bottom of home screen (need option to toggle OFF). Same with CARLOS, no attack points with new weapons – is this a BUG? Note: You lose all your energy with the upgrade.
PROS: The fight list is now relative to your level (finally). The jobs list remembers your place – no more scrolling down to best jobs alla time
OVERALL: Not worth upgrading. Should be pulled—needs bug/hot fix update. I wouldn’t have upgraded if I’d know these issues beforehand.
I play and am addicted to Mafia Wars, both on Facebook and iPhone – I love them both. I was rapt to get MWs as an iPhone native app—it’s hands down the BEST in this bulging genre. However, the iPhone version doesn’t login/access your Facebook/MySpace ID and loses several Web version functions like: Bank, Robbing, Looting & Collections, Achievements & Gifting etc.

Don’t update to the new version, I lost all my attack/defense points (was around 500 went down to 70) and now wierd things are happening with the weapons.. I sold most of them and it didnt do anything to the points, now if i buy weapons my points either don’t increase, or go up by 1 when they’re supposed to go up say 10?? Not worth playing it til its fixed..

There is an explanation of all the changes in 1.1 in Zynga’s forums.

Basically, they fixed the attack & defense numbers to reflect only the weapons/defense/vehicles that your actual mafia can use.
If you have 5 people in your mafia and 100 weapons, you will only see the attack points of your 5 best weapons. This makes perfect sense as you have no one to use your extra weapons.

I have a problem with my app. I’m level 40 but whenever i click the fight option i can only see people levels 1-4 to fight with. Once earlier i clicked it and it showed people in the same range with me, but when i closed out and came back it was back to how it was. HELP! If I redownload the app will I lose all of my info?

Anyone having problems with the game crashing??
i love the game and enjoy playing it but it crashes constantly!

what is the point in playing mafia wars once you have property income over a few million?!?!
No need to fight, or do jobs, or level up.
Only ever buy property….. its boring.
I am L23 with 17 mafia, and ~400 att/ 400 def.
I have 17+M income p/hr.
No one ever fights me, so no need for more mafia.
am i missing something ?

Dude, it just gets more boring as time goes on. I’m lvl 113 and I currently get $55 million every HOUR. I have over 500 mafia and a butt load of weapons. I spend hours buying tons of weapons but still have “unlucky breaks” to guys who I’m x10 stronger than. I spent 20 lvl’s dumping into secret attach stats and still fighting blows chucks.
This game is very lame and needs severe updating. What am I supposed to do with 10 billion dollars? Buy more property? Why? What’s the point? Game is lame.

Unlucky breaks?!
I lose to guys that have 200Att/200Def when I am easily at 600att/650 def. Did I mention that their mafia family is 1/2 as big as mine? I don’t get.

Yeah the Gameplay AI is really awful in this game….
ZYNGA really dropped the ball on this.
It makes for a really crappy gaming experience.
It happens to me alot as well.
Mob wars is better.

i just dowloaded the mafia wars app i phone 3g last night. played it for a few hours. now my fight list won’t generate, its just empty? even when i hit refresh it does not load. every other aspect of the game works fine. anyone have any solution or suggestions?
