Q&F: DIRECTV
Michael (Admin) | Apr 6, 2009 Entertainment, Quick & Free

I have DirecTV at home, and this app rules!! I have yet to actually need to use it because I’m always home, but I bet if I had a life it would come in handy on a regular basis.
DirecTV’s app isn’t just for flipping through channel listings… it also lets you set your DVR to record stuff! I did a couple of test runs and it worked great but with one little flaw: it told me “your receivers do not support Record Series”. I was able to set it to record an episode with no problem, but my receiver definitely does do the Record Series thing so someone’s gonna have to fix that bug.

Pinouts
Swain Valasek | Apr 3, 2009 Reference
Every now and then, if you sift through all the bodily function apps and 99 cent games closely, you’ll find a really nice app to build up your budding iPhone virtual reference library. Pinouts from CP3 Inc is one such app. It’s incredibly straightforward…it provides the most common network and telephone connector pinouts for crimping your own cables. The content itself has actually been freely available on the AlaTec website since 1997 but has been aggregated and mobilized on the iPhone for a small price (call it a convenience fee).

App Preview: A Special Phone
Michael (Admin) | Apr 2, 2009 Utilities
If you have a disability that makes dialing on the iPhone a pain in the ass, help is on the way. There are plenty of phone dialers out there on the market already, but A Special Phone is intended specifically for the disabled.
A Special Phone gives you six dialing slots that can be assigned to your contacts with a few quick taps, and after that it’s shake-shake-shake. Shake once to dial Contact #1, shake twice for #2, and so on.

Gems 3D
Swain Valasek | Apr 1, 2009 Games
A day late and a dollar short. Too little, too late. Late to the party. Someone left the cake out in the rain. Whatever idiom you choose, it applies to Gems 3D from Max Fomitchev (aka Ultramax). This is another ‘match 3′ game that tries to provide a fresh take; the need for each gem to have a clear path (like a maze) to the spot you want it to go. Beyond that, it’s match the like gems so they disappear, you score some points, more gems randomly drop in, rinse and repeat. The sole ‘powerup’ is called a trick which allows you to turn any gem wild as long as it forms a match. One nice feature is you can also form matches on a diagonal. The game provides some unusual music which was composed by the author; a mix of classical and techno.

Q&F: Scent of a Chicken
Michael (Admin) | Apr 1, 2009 Entertainment, Quick & Free

With the iTunes App Store now sporting about 30,000 apps, developers are desperate to stand out from the crowd. How desperate, you ask? Desperate enough that one company has figured out a way to MAKE YOUR iPHONE SMELL LIKE CHICKEN.
Yeah, you read that right! I never, ever, ever imagined that I’d be typing these words but it’s true: you can make your iPhone smell like a rotisserie chicken. When the Scent of a Chicken review request came in I was like pfffffft yeah right these people are idiots… but what’s amazing is that it actually works! Tap the picture of the big juicy chicken, wait about 20 seconds, and suddenly it’ll smell like you’re at a summer barbecue. Seriously, it smells EXACTLY like roasted chicken. Un-freakin-believable.
