As an old man was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife’s voice urgently warning him, “Herman, I just heard on the news that there’s a car going the wrong way on Route 280. Please be careful!”

“It’s not just one car,” said Herman, “it’s hundreds of them!”

18,000 Cool Jokes is full of jokes like this one… corny, slightly amusing jokes. Some of them vaguely qualify as “mature”, but the vast majority are are pretty mild.

So are there really 18,000 jokes in Cramzy’s app? I have no idea! But I will say that there are a lot of them… I’ve paged through a lot of jokes with this thing and I’ve only seen a few appear more than once. Some of them, though, aren’t necessarily “jokes” in the traditional sense. The “Dumb” category, for example, seems to be a compilation of true acts of stupidity, some of which are still kind of  funny but not in joke-punchline format. Here’s an example:

Guns for Hire, and Arizona company specializing in staged gunfights for Western movies, got a call from a 47-year-old woman who wanted to have her husband shot. She was sentenced to four years in jail.

18,000 Cool Jokes is divided into 48 categories ranging from Animals to Dirty to Lawyers to Yo Mama. If jumping directly into a category ain’t your style, the app will serve a random joke when you first launch the app and you can either hit the forward arrow or just shake your iPhone to get another… and another… and another.

The only real bummer about browsing jokes in this app is that you can’t go backwards. Sure, you can bookmark jokes in a “Fav’s” list, but going back to the previous joke can’t be done for some reason. Search would also be a nice function, especially if this app has as many jokes as it claims to.

In the iTunes app description it states that you can filter jokes by length and this is true, but you have to go to your iPhone Settings screen to do it. I kind of wish this function was in-app, but eh I suppose this other way is fine just as long as it’s there.

As a joke book, 18,000 Cool Jokes is actually pretty good if you’re looking for jokes that are generally clean and unoffensive and quite often cheesy. I’d like to be able to go back to the previous joke, but other than that this seems like a pretty safe buy for just a dollar.

And now, in true Welcome Back, Kotter fashion, I opened with a joke so now I have to close with one:

A policeman spots a woman driving and knitting at the same time. Driving up beside her, he shouts out the window, “Pull over!”

“No,” she shouts back, “a pair of socks!”

Cool stuff! I love joke apps too. I made a joke app, more of a simulator type app called “Baby Translator” and several other comedy translation devices. Check out the Baby Translator when you get a chance!! Viva la iPhone!

Several years ago there was a rash of “Ain’t necessarily” jokes, as in; “Grape Nuts ain’t necessarily a social disease” and :
“A footstool ain’t necessarily a twelve inch turd”. Any anthologies of same?
