DISCLAIMER

(if I put it in caps, bold, and italics, it looks more legal-like)

I’ve said it in previous reviews, and I’ll say it again here as a caviat to this review, and by way of defending myself if you absolutely 100% disagree with my review of this application.  I am NOT a video game enthusiast.  I didn’t get the video game gene.  I didn’t go to the arcade as a kid, and I don’t use my kids’ Wii.  Mostly because I suck at most video, computer, and electronic games.  I do play The Sims and Mafia Wars and some other types of games, so I’m not a game hater.  Really, I’m not.

ThreadBound….what can I say.  It’s graphics and story make me feel like I’m caught in some strange acid trip where The Beatle’s Magical Mystery Tour crossed paths with Pixar’s A Bug’s Life.   The basic idea is to maneuver this flying stick bug so that a little blue dude can walk down trees and shrubs in an autumn forest without falling to his death.

I couldn’t do it.  Trying to get that stick bug to fly to and land where I wanted was like playing Twister in mid-air.  No matter how I’d angle my iPhone, that little blue meanie would fall and I’d have to try again.   I nearly chucked my iPhone against a wall it was so frustrating.   The kids couldn’t even get the stick bug to fly right, so I’m pretty sure it wasn’t just me.   There are the obligatory obstacles and falling things that make it more challenging as you move up in levels, but I think they have some work to do on how well the games works on the iPhone or iTouch.  It doesn’t respond to moving the device around as I expect it would, or other games I’ve tried do.  I’ve never been this frustrated with an iPhone game before.  The application also has a feature that lets you build your own levels, if you’re into that kind of thing.

That being said, I don’t get the point of the game anyway.  Seems that if you were over the age of four, the premise of this game would bore the living hell out of you anyway.  Which is why I find it ironic that ThreadBound comes from NeverBored Studios.  I was bored.  Sorry.

Looks pretty ambitious, especially the build-your-own-level part… well at least it’s only version 2! Hopefully they’ll keep working on it.

  • James

The game doesn’t use accelerometer controls, you control the stick bug with your thumbs.

  • Tim

I actually found the controls pretty smooth. The coolest part though was that in the game you can go online and chat with people that have this game or some other ones too.

  • Chrisa

Or, go online and comiserate with them. I found a few folks who agreed with me. I don’t know if they are video game idiots like I am or not.

  • Chrisa

Yes, which didn’t work. I can’t get many iPhone apps to work with my thumb. Might as well be up my ass – works the same.

  • Tim

Whoa! I don’t mean to sound offensive, but should a “video game idiot” be reviewing video games?
