It’s an all too cliché scene: Our hero is in front of an explosive device furiously ticking down in that soulless “beep, beep, beep.” It’s almost been disarmed, averting total disaster, but as the timer gets closer and closer to zero, only one choice remains: Cut the red wire or the blue wire? Whoa, calm down. This isn’t some 90’s action film, it’s iBombSquad, a new gaming app that allows players to do their best Keanu Reeves impression (The first one that came to mind because I watched “Speed” last weekend) as they remove wires without setting off the ticking time bomb on their screen.

iBombSquad is from Banzali Games and, according to the developer, is a memory game that pushes your concentration to the limit. It begins with a time bomb consisting of two wires. To remove a wire, simply swipe the black casing away from the bomb within the given time (normally four to five seconds). As you progress through the levels an additional colored wire will be added. You must start with the newest wire and work your way backwards from newest to oldest to disarm the bomb. Fail to do so and you’ll know immediately (BOOM = loss)

This game is fun…for about thirty seconds. If you were smart enough to buy an iPhone, know your colors and have any short term memory left after being a teenager you will master this game very quickly, thus losing interest. There is simply no progression in difficulty. Sure, you advance in levels and the “bonus bombs” are actually pretty fun, but the game play itself is very repetitive. I saw no difference from level one to level six.

Now at this point it would be easy to use the phrases you all are expecting such as “this game isn’t da bomb” or “this game lacks explosive features such as blah blah.” Instead, I will take the high road and simply say this about iBombSquad: Good premise, but is lacking in the challenge department. If you’re going to pay for an app, even for $0.99, it should be one you expect to use more than once. In my opinion, this one’s a dud (okay I couldn’t resist).
