If you have a deck of cards in the house there’s a good chance the box says “Hoyle” on it, so it seems somewhat fitting that their legendary name is now stamped on an iPhone video poker game.

There are tons and tons of casino games in the App Store, and if video poker is your thang then you should definitely be giving this app a closer look. As you’d expect with just about anything produced by a major household brand, HOYLE Video Poker oozes quality from the moment you start it up and the whole experience is just as good as if you were pumping quarters into an actual video poker machine.

Five varieties of poker are included here, including the classic Jacks or Better plus a couple of other games that count Jokers and 2s as wild. They’re all exactly what you’d expect… tap HOLD on the cards you want to keep, and as your draw cards are dealt you get a nice little readout showing what you bet, what you won, and how much you have left in the bank. Four of the five games have reasonable minimums on the winning hands such as a pair of Jacks or, where wild cards are concerned, 3 of a kind. If losing constantly is pissing you off, though, just fire up 5 Card Draw where you can win with only a pair of 2s! It’s hard to lose on this one, and eventually you might even get sick of winning because it’s just that easy.

Encore built in all the requisite bells & whistles to make this game complete including play statistics, auto-hold, and a shake option, and other than making it spit out real money I can’t think of anything else that would make this app more playable. With all the other casino games that are free or $1, paying $2 for HOYLE Video Poker may sound like a stretch but it’s true that you get what you pay for and, in this case, it’s definitely worth buying if you like this kind of game.
