I’ve never met Scott Moakes, but I can already tell that he’s either a down-home country boy and/or a dude with a wacky sense of humor!

Ship Creek is a hilariously low-tech sea combat game where your badly-drawn battleship is being assaulted from all directions by equally rough-looking enemies against a crumpled paper backdrop. Your mission is to fight off planes, hot air balloons, and other boats with an unlimited supply of scribbled dots, I mean, ammo, as they bombard you with bombs and more scribbles.

The really funny thing about this game is the sound… background music is a very backwoods banjo track, and everything else was clearly produced by a couple of guys who are mouthing their own sound effects the same way 10 year old boys do when they’re crashing toys into each other.

Ship Creek supports iPod music, but to truly appreciate this game you really need to have the in-game sound playing. And don’t let the scribbled artwork and juvenile SFX fool you… this is a very well-made app with a very deliberately homemade feel to it. Ship control is pretty easy with left/right arrows for movement and left/right cannon buttons for taking down the enemy; holding down the cannon buttons before releasing will launch your little black ammo clumps farther, thus making it possible to hit the targets flying at the top of the screen.

I love that there’s a global scoreboard that actually supports more than 8-10 characters. One thing I’d like to see added, though, would be some powerups. Maybe let me shoot a boat or plane that gives me more health? The main object of this game isn’t just to destroy, it’s also to survive, and things get chaotic pretty quickly so powerups might make the game more addictive than it already is.

Bottom line is I really like this game and I think it’s easily worth your hard-earned $.99. The gameplay itself may not be all that original, but Ship Creek is a game with personality and I think that alone makes it worth a look.

Cute game but the lite version has the banner ads millimeters away from the controls so, especially when things get a little crazy you are almost guaranteed to get bumped out of the game (which doesn’t have save state as far as I can tell) to the random banner ad you just bumped into.

Could the banner ad go up top maybe?
