If you’re looking for something that’s like Shazam but better, look no further. Yeah Shazam’s free and MusicID with Lyrics costs about the same as an Egg McMuffin, but if there’s a free music app that comes with all of MusicID’s features I’d like to see it!
Shazam, in case you’ve never heard of it (loser!), has been a staple of the App Store pretty much since the store opened up. It “listens” to your music and identifies it, it provides YouTube and iTunes links, and now it tags your music on a map so you can try to reconnect the dots if things are little hazy after last night’s pub crawl.
MusicID does ALL these things plus… it has LYRICS! Finally. I don’t know why Shazam doesn’t have lyrics, but not only does MusicID provide them whenever possible, it also comes with a bunch of other cool features including a Now Playing function so you can follow along with whatever your iPod is playing (sorry Lyrics+, now I don’t need you anymore either).
Another great addition is the search tool. Search has three modes that let you track down artists, songs, or specific lyrics. Wanna know who’s singing about iPhones? Select the search tool’s Lyrics button, put in the keyword, and voilá you’ve got a list of songs that fit the bill.
Something else this app does that’s pretty nice is it tries to hook you up with new music by providing a list of songs that are similar to what you’re listening to, and there’s also a Popular music tab for scoping out what’s hot just in case you’re totally out of the loop like I am.
Except for the occasional no-lyrics-available situation, which I guess is more on lyrics provider Gracenote than MusicID, this app does its job admirably. It’s already replaced two apps on my iPhone (Shazam and Lyrics+), so what’s the next step? How about replacing the default iPod app! I don’t know if that’s even possible, but if it can be done with coverflow and everything then I’m sure Gravity Mobile can pull it off.
MusicID is the app that I’ve always wished Shazam would be. Don’t get me wrong now… Shazam’s one of the best free apps out there… but if you’re willing to fork over a few bucks for MusicID it’s totally worth it.
iTunes Link – MusicID with Lyrics

- I tested this function on the episode of South Park where that kid starts pimping at school
- Shh, it's listening
- The Analyzing animation is neato
- Here's an idea... lemme tap the cover art for a bigger pic!
- I've never heard any of these songs... cuz I'm old
- Everything you identify gets saved under My Songs
- Love the search tool! I guess Linkin Park wants me to shut up...
