Elven Chronicles

As you can probably tell by the name, Elven Chronicles is all medieval with swords and dragons and spells and all that. It’s an RPG, and if you’re a big enough nerd to automatically know that an RPG is a role-playing game then this is may be something you could sink your teeth into. People who have already compared it to Zelda and Final Fantasy are right on in some respects… it’s a little like old school Zelda (but better!) in the graphics department and similar to Final Fantasy in that it features turn-based battles, but whether or not you go ga-ga for this game will depend on what kind of RPG’er you are and that’s something I’ll get into later.

Every RPG is set against a storyline backdrop, and in this one you play the role of Rogan, a young stud who wakes up after being ambushed by bad guys. Apparently it’s your lucky day because you’re being cared for by a hot elf girl named Jada and, if it were me, I’d probably sit around drinking ale all day and let the world go to hell. Luckily for mankind, though, Rogan is waaaaay more noble than I am so he and the lady elf immediately go off and start completing quests handed to them by the locals. Obtain these items, defeat that monster, become a Level (x) badass, that kind of thing.

Here’s the good news on FacebookBirthdays: it does what it says it does by listing all of your Facebook friends by month and showing when their birthday is. I just installed this app yesterday so I can’t speak to how well the push feature works, but let’s give it the benefit of the doubt in that area and assume it works.

Here’s the bad news on FacebookBirthdays: it doesn’t do anything else! There are several other apps that also display Facebook birthday info plus a little more, and I think that’s ok if this app would just be the best at it… but gosh darnit, it doesn’t even have an options panel, and the “Today & Upcoming” only shows birthdays from my Contacts instead of Facebook. I like that it shows birthdays from my Contacts, but that’s not the main purpose of this app.

If my name were Konstantinos and I had the ability to make this app way better than it currently is, here’s what I’d do…

App Sale: Galactic Gunner

Galactic Gunner is on sale for free – normally $.99-$2.99

I’ve only played a little bit of this game and it’s pretty good, especially if you can get it for nothing! You play the part of the gunner on a fighter ship in some kind of epic struggle against bad aliens called Trepidoids. The game mostly involves a lot of frantic tapping as you try to shoot down the enemy, and Ezone did a nice job on the 3D graphics.

Galactic Gunner went on sale two days ago so it could start costing $$$ anytime now. Hurry up and grab it while it’s still free!

TipCat Mobile (a CWC company) has certainly made a splash with their first action game for the iPhone called Cell War.  It’s an arcade shooter, a horizontal shmup to be exact (and we’re all about exact here at IAR).  There’s no shortage of these babies in the app store so does it carve out a niche or simply step to the back of the line?  TipCat tells us it’s the former and I tend to agree…read on for their capsule review followed by the comments of yours truly in the name of all that’s honest and fair.

SkySmash 1918

The past few weeks I haven’t been reviewing too many apps because of the backlog of free codes, and now that it’s time to get back to reviewing stuff I can’t think of a better way to do it than with a kickass shmup!

SkySmash 1918 is your basic top-down shooter, a la Hotfield and iFighter, and it’s beautiful. It seems like Richard Wilson didn’t put a ton of thought into the design of some of the menus, but screw menus! It’s the game that counts, and the game itself is really a sight to behold. I guess it’s mostly the ground graphics that have me so impressed. When you’re playing this type of game, the entire backdrop is what’s beneath your plane (in this case it’s a biplane, actually) and SkySmash’s ground looks really nice. Crisp is probably a better word. Everything else in the game is top-notch as well… from the way the biplane moves and tilts to the Hogan’s Heroes soundtrack to all the crap that’s exploding in the sky around you, it’s got all the trademarks of a very well produced shooter.
