I’m a single guy who vacuums once a year and survives mainly on beer and pizza, so it’s no wonder that interior design isn’t my thing… not in real life, anyway. Still, even for me, Home Sweet Home is a pretty fun game that combines a fairly relaxed version of the time management genre with problem solving and creativity as you try to furnish rooms that meet the needs of some really weird clients.

Big Blue Bubble’s port of this PC franchise turns you into an interior designer trying to meet the needs of clients whose tastes and requirements are all over the place, and apparently being clear about their needs ain’t how they roll. Each client’s demands are conveyed through increasingly cryptic riddles, and it’s up to you to figure out just what the hell it is that they want.

After getting the lowdown on your client, you get to choose from a variety of furnishings like wallpaper, flooring, couches, tables, and other home decor items. You have to place a minimum number of items in the room and do it all within the budget provided and, depending on the mix you choose, your client’s satisfaction level with either go up or down. Items can be placed just about wherever you want within the confines of the room’s grid and they can also be rotated if necessary. Once you’ve met your item quota and achieved the minimum satisfaction level, you can move on to building everything you’ve chosen.

Your work crew isn’t introduced right away, but before long you’ll have to have your interiors built by a small crew of color-coded laborers. Items that glow a certain color, say blue for example, are best built by the blue worker. If you put the green guy on a job that’s best suited for blue, you’ll have to keep him/her hydrated with coffee to keep things going.

Home Sweet Home isn’t what I’d call a true “time management” game… Sally’s Spa and Sushi Chain are much more hardcore (and much more stressful!)… but time does play a factor in this game so moving fast is better than moving slow.

If you have a creative side and like the idea of decorating interiors, you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting $3 of enjoyment out of this game. It could use a wider range of catalog items, but what’s there is already pretty substantial so I say go for it! Home Sweet Home is fun and very nicely executed.
