Just when I think I’m out, they pull me back in. That was my recurring thought as I downloaded an app that billed itself as Moron Test 2 in its review request.  I’d reviewed another such game a couple months ago and thought I was done taking these pass/fail tests.  I guess I was wrong.

The actual name of the app is Brain Tester (Highly Addictive!!, the title adds in the App Store) and if you’ve seen or tried one of these ‘Can You Pass the Test?’ games before and enjoyed them, you’re ready to try this one out as well.  AppATapp’s Brain Tester is pretty much in the same vein as the others in the genre:  you’re asked questions about the number of litres in a millilitre, to solve puzzles, and answer questions.  There are a memory tests where you must recall exact sequences.  You must remember shapes, colors, and follow instructions to the point of ignoring or setting aside your initial instincts and assumptions.

The game looks pleasing enough; instead of a white background, there is a wood veneer background.  The test is timed and depending on how quickly you answer questions correctly, the app will measure/rank your intelligence accordingly.  The sound effects consist of two: a click sound when answers are submitted and a flatulence effect (aka, a fart) when an incorrect answer is supplied.

If you overlook the spelling and grammatical errors, it’s a decent app.  Unfortunately, there really isn’t much about Brain Tester that would cause it to stand out from the crowd of other intelligence tests out there. The questions always come in the same order, so one can memorize what answer is supposed to be clicked when in order to get back to where they were before.

Does this constitute an addictive app?  For some, possibly.  Not for others.  As a quick aside- I think I’m going to declare the word, “addictive”, off-limits for a while in my future app reviews.  It’s way overused, IMHO.

I do think that if an app like Brain Tester wishes to be a serious contender to some of the more popular intelligence apps (who shall not be named) out there, it’s going to have to go the extra mile and either be completely original or do at least one thing a little differently than the other apps out there.

One final note, I noticed that a few reviewers commented on the game’s constant cutting out in previous versions.  It would seem that problem has been resolved in the current one; mine didn’t crash or cut out once.

    Hi everyone,

The Developer has given us two promo codes for interested readers. Here they are:

    1. 93P3PXYRKRRE
    2. XRHXLMPENWN6

Please remember to provide feedback to the Developer about their app in iTunes’ App Store. Thanks! Michael E.

The developer is from the Uk so I can only assume that most spelling errors are due the fact that English and American words are spelt differenly. Very food app though thoughrly enjoyed it!

I get that, Ryan, and I’m not trying to be a douche to the developer (though I realize that I probably come across that way bringing up this point). He put the app together from scratch and that’s awesome. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t make an issue out of spelling at all, but when the app’s supposed to be an ‘intelligence test’…

Here’s an exact example that I didn’t include as one of my screenshots when I posted the review last night, but will now since I just noticed that I screwed up the orientation of my screenshots the first time around: “Remeber this shape… Click here to continue” Across the pond or not, there are only so many ways the word, ‘remember’, can be correctly spelled (or spelt), right?

Again, not trying to be a douche, but there were a few errors that jumped out at me that probably shouldn’t exist in an intelligence/brain tester app where attention to detail (on the part of the player) means the difference between a ‘pass’ or a ‘fail’. I’m just saying.

UK vs. US spelling differences are usually pretty clear… “colour” vs. “color”, “spilt” vs. “spilled”, etc…. so I’m with Michael here! Blatant errors in an app that’s supposed to be judging your intelligence are an oxymoron of the highest order and, imo, point to a lack of quality control on the development side.

Thank you for this review, we have review the app again and changed the spelling mistakes and changed a few slides. I hope this makes it better for every user.

    More updates to follow.

Some people are still saying that the app is crashing, but, we have tested it on every iPod Touch and iPhone on every firmware and it never crashes. I think the people who are reviewing must have jailbroken iPhones becuase there is no crashing with the standard firmware.

    Thank,
