Fling a Thing (Free) by Big Blue Bubble
Available on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad
Many moons ago I reviewed Big Blue Bubble’s Elven Chronicles and Home Sweet Home, so I was already familiar with BBB’s work when I picked up Fling a Thing. These guys do quality work, and I wasn’t disappointed with their latest offering where you fling this alien-looking “thing” up into the air with the aim of popping bubbles and grabbing bonuses as you fling your way upward through the levels.
The Thing you’re flinging is any one of several fish/insect creatures, starting with one that looks like one of those scum-sucking fish you see in aquariums, except this one has dragonfly wings. You start off with a limited number of throws (flings), and you get chances to grab more throws as you continue to pop bubbles and clear the levels. The goal is to pop all the bubbles in each level by using as few throws as possible.
The basic premise of flinging and popping is only mildly entertaining, but Fling a Thing’s powerups and star-based upgrades are what make it surprisingly addictive. In most levels you’ll encounter things like magnets that attract bubbles for mass popping, eggs that spawn baby Things who do some popping for you, and bubble gum that makes your Thing bounce around which gives you a better chance at taking out more bubbles. Stars also float around, and when you gather enough of them you can upgrade your Thing and buy new levels. Stars can also be bought with real money, of course.
If there’s one thing I’d ask for in future updates, though, it would be checkpoints. Fling a Thing is fun and I plan on keeping it on my iPhone for a while, but it would be nice if I didn’t have to start at the very beginning every time I run out of throws. Checkpoints might interfere with the sale of stars (you need them to unlock new levels, too), but I’d be more inclined to play if I could start from level 20 or level 40 instead of at the bottom of the ladder.
