Perfect Pitch Piano ($0.99) by Brad Jasper
Available on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad
I can’t sing, I can’t dance, and I definitely can’t play piano! My mom never made me take lessons. I think she was afraid the piano teacher would wind up choking the shit out of me which would have been a valid concern given my complete lack of musical talent. But for some reason I’ve always wanted to at least try the piano, and Perfect Pitch Piano is that chance.
This app seems like it was made for complete beginners like me, and it takes kind of a tough love approach to trying to force you to listen to the keys before caving in and actually showing them to you. And, like the piano teacher I never had, it also freaks out occasionally.

A few months ago a friend of mine sent me the you tube promo video for the Novation Launchpad for Abelton Live. The device is a controller for making beats and loops. I fell in love instantly and even though I’m not in the music scene I totally wanted one.
Now thanks to mifki and their app SoundGrid I don’t have to spend more than five dollars to have my own beat maker only iPhone. It’s no Novation but this thing is AMAZING. This app is by far the best music app I have played with. It’s easy enough to pick up right away and hammer out some beats, and the mixing options are there to get complex with your beats.

The iPod Touch and iPhone music players, although adequate and stable, haven’t really seen a revolutionary change since it debuted in the very first iPod. That’s not to say that it’s a bad player, because it isn’t. It still sets the standard for the majority of players out there. But it is a little…how do you say…boring? Bland?
Apparently, I’m not the only one who thinks so. Even the briefest of perusals of the AppStore will find any number of music players designed to do everything the stock i-device player does while adding a splash of color and attitude.

TopJam

TopJam, from Ole Gammelgaard Poulsen, is one of those apps that make you wonder why no one thought of creating it before now. It’s not a revolutionary concept and certainly won’t change the world as we know it, but it’s still pretty neat. What exactly does TopJam do? Its primary function is to pull up the 100 top US iTunes music videos from YouTube so that you can watch them on your iPod Touch or iPhone.
Cool, huh?

myTtuner

In the days before Pandora, Sirius, and Napster, radio ruled the world. If you didn’t own the album, CD, or cassette, the only way to hear your favorite tunes was the radio. Your yearning for the latest from Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers or U2 could only be satisfied by a radio DJ.
Sometimes you might flip on the radio and catch your favorite song halfway through. That wasn’t so bad. Sometimes you only caught the last few seconds of it. That was bad.
Every now and then, if you were lucky- really lucky- you’d enter a kind of musical zone. In the zone, you could flip on the radio, catch your favorite song as it was starting and listen to it all the way through. If you were really in the zone, you could change stations after the song had ended and catch it again, right at the very beginning.
Good times. I don’t miss them one bit.
Gianluca Falasca’s MyTtuner- The Ultimate Radio operates under the principle that somewhere on the world’s wide web, an internet station is playing a song or an artist you like. With MyTtuner, you tell it who or what you want to hear (you can enter up to 6 choices) and when the app finds that song or artist, it will let you know (as long as you’re still in the app, of course). Then, just tap your screen and enjoy on-demand music old school style, minus those pesky subscription fees. If you really like a station, you can select it as a favorite and listen to it whenever you want. Do you have favorite artists or groups? Great! Save them and the next time the app is opened, you can quickly search for their music.
MyTtuner will also generate a listing of every artist being played at the moment and update every 60 seconds.
Sweet, right? Unfortunately, MyTtuner initially had some serious issues with stability; it crashed every time I used it, even after an update designed to eliminate them. Each crash would erase my saved searches, my saved webcast stations, and music history. As you can imagine, that was a pretty big disappointment, especially for an app with a $2.99 sale price.
These past couple days though, it seems to be running better. When it works, it’s great. When it works, I start to think about terminating my Rhapsody subscription. But when it doesn’t, it’s quite frustrating.
My only suggestion for improvement- beyond stability- would be MyTtuner’s appearance. It’s a little dull and could benefit from a colorful makeover.
With a couple more updates and a bigger pool of internet stations to find the music and artists I like, I might just stop feeding my money to Rhapsody and use those monthly fees to buy more apps…

Metronome TS

A metronome. It is a musician’s best buddy when wanting to succeed in being on beat. As a band geek who loves my saxophone dearly, I had to test this app out. It seems that every band geek and band director has some form of a metronome on their iPhone, so that you don’t have to always remember your physical metronome.
I have tried other metronomes before and must say that this one by Thezi Studios definitely out-performs my other ones, even my actual metronome, which cost $20! What will $3.99 get you in this app? First of all, you get a metronome (who would have thought :D )! This metronome is one of the best I have seen in the app store boasting a BPM count (for you non-nerds this is the beats per measure, or the number of counts per measure) of 30-250! And you don’t have to scroll from beat count to beat count; you can enter it with a keyboard entering feature too! The upbeats can be set from 0-19. The best part is the counting of what gets the upbeat: you can choose from the simple quarter note up to a very specific sixteenth rest, sixteenth note, sixteenth rest, sixteenth note! For all of you singers, there is a feature where you can choose a song from your iPod library and have the metronome running with that. This app will also save your previous tempos and let your group them in specific “folders”.
What made this app great was that not only was it a great metronome jam packed with features, but it also has a tuning fork. You just choose your concert pitch note (for C instruments, that is the note you normally play), and boom! You’ve got a concert pitch to tune your instrument or everyone’s instruments! At $3.99, this app is definitely worth the price, so if you need a new metronome that will definitely exceed your expectations, look at purchasing metronome TS!
- wow! this thing goes up to 250 :o
- you can organize your tempos into groups
- you can save your tempos for future reference :)
- woot! a tuner!

Drool Radio
Michael (Admin) | Nov 5, 2009 Music

Call me crazy, but internet radio is pretty much the same no matter where you’re getting it. The content, that is… it’s the same! With the exception of apps like Pandora and Boombox that let you personalize your own “station”, straight-up internet radio is always just internet radio. There’s a gazillion internet radio stations out there, and it seems like there are just as many internet radio iPhone apps. So what makes one different from the other?
The answer is partially in features, but in my mind it’s mostly in the app’s style, just like if you’re buying an actual radio at a store. Do you want the radio that looks cool and has high-quality components, or do you want the one that looks like a cheap piece of crap? Drool Radio is the one that looks cool. It’s very retro, very slick, and has just about everything you could ask for in a pure internet radio app.

MusicID with Lyrics
Michael (Admin) | Nov 3, 2009 Music

If you’re looking for something that’s like Shazam but better, look no further. Yeah Shazam’s free and MusicID with Lyrics costs about the same as an Egg McMuffin, but if there’s a free music app that comes with all of MusicID’s features I’d like to see it!
Shazam, in case you’ve never heard of it (loser!), has been a staple of the App Store pretty much since the store opened up. It “listens” to your music and identifies it, it provides YouTube and iTunes links, and now it tags your music on a map so you can try to reconnect the dots if things are little hazy after last night’s pub crawl.
MusicID does ALL these things plus… it has LYRICS! Finally. I don’t know why Shazam doesn’t have lyrics, but not only does MusicID provide them whenever possible, it also comes with a bunch of other cool features including a Now Playing function so you can follow along with whatever your iPod is playing (sorry Lyrics+, now I don’t need you anymore either).
