Q&F: Album Shuffle
Michael (Admin) | Sep 24, 2009 Music, Quick & Free

You know that thing your iPhone does when you’re running the iPod and you turn it sideways and it changes from a list of songs to a nice row of album art that you can flick your way through? That’s called Coverflow! Just in case you didn’t know.
Coverflow is cool, especially if you’ve taken the time to download album art in iTunes, but it’s just so… organized. The anal retentive among us surely appreciate this, but what about slobs like me? Enter Album Shuffle, a free alternative for viewing your iPod albums in a mixed up convoluted mess instead of Apple’s cool-but-rigid method.
Q&F: Pandora Radio
Michael (Admin) | Sep 1, 2009 Music

I know, I know, Pandora’s far from “new” but it recently occurred to me that there are a lot of truly clueless (and truly new) iPhone users out there! Despite Pandora’s perennial Top 25 placement, I still run into people here and there who have never heard of it. Maybe they don’t look at the App Store’s Top 25 list, maybe they don’t “get” internet radio, maybe they actually do live under a rock! Beats me.
Since this app is widely considered to be the undisputed king of iPhone radio services, I’ll keep this short: if you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch, get Pandora. No matter what you’re obsessed with, whether it’s Metallica or Taylor Hicks or The Beatles, Pandora will serve up music that’s either made by the object of your affection or artists who are just like him/her.
My experience is that it’s not great if you’re out walking the dog because network coverage can be pretty spotty (as is the case with all streaming content), but when you’re stuck in one place with wifi and you need some new music, this is most likely gonna be your go-to app. We’ve already reviewed a few other internet radio apps, but somehow I always come back to Pandora when I need to rock out.
This has been a public service announcement. Thank you for not making fun of us for writing about an app that’s over a year old.

SongDNA
Michael (Admin) | Aug 25, 2009 Music

If you’re strictly looking at the icons it would be easy to assume that SongDNA was made by the same design-haters who made Song Info, but you’d be wrong! The two apps do essentially the same thing (deliver music lyrics and trivia and whatnot) and even though 8Projects may not have put a lot of thought into their icon, they at least went to the trouble of arranging your music info on a single, readable page within the app.
All SongDNA asks you for is an artist name or a title of some kind and then it will spit out some search results that lead to a page where you can see a short artist bio, YouTube videos, “highest US chart” position for songs, and if you’re lucky you’ll get some lyrics, too.

Song Info
Michael (Admin) | Aug 25, 2009 Music

Ok… first of all, “LOL” at Song Info’s icon! I know it has zero impact on the app’s functionality, but based on the clip art icon and the screenshots you’ll see at the end of this review, it’s abundantly clear that design and aesthetics weren’t part of First Option Solutions Ltd.’s gameplan when they produced this app.
At least the icon tells you what the app is for… song info! Oh yeah, the name does that, too. If you’re obsessed with a certain song or artist or album, Song Info will help you find stuff out. Lyrics, Wikipedia entries, YouTube videos, album reviews, artist bios and photos, you name it and it’s in here. Kind of.
I say “kind of” because nothing’s actually “in” Song Info; the whole app is more like a music trivia gateway that takes a song name, album title, or artist and plugs it into a whole bunch of different websites that may or may not contain info on what you’re looking for.
B-Day Giveaway: ooTunes

Carrie Underwood is purrrrrrrty
Mike Lightman went ga-ga for ooTunes back in May, calling this app “arguably the most comprehensive & extensive radio app in the App Store.” Sounds like a stamp of approval to me!
I haven’t tried this app myself, but Mike’s review sounds like proof positive that streaming iPhone music actually does go further than Pandora and AOL Radio. You can get Bulgarian hiphop on this thing? Crazy!!

Tap Tap Revenge: Coldplay
Ian Hicks | Jul 22, 2009 Games, Music
In all honesty I have never been able to get into the Tap Tap Revenge series by developer Tapulous. Pretending to play a fake guitar on your TV is one thing, but I felt downright stupid tapping to music on a 4.5” x 2.4” screen. However, when I saw this game paired with the name Coldplay, I was ready to give Tap Tap another shot. What I ended up finding was that once I gave it a fair shot, the game is actually fun in its rhythmic tapping of a screen. If Tap Tap Revenge: Coldplay can please me, this game will be sure to please Coldplay and Tap Tap fans alike.

FingerBeat
T.J. Brumfield | Jul 19, 2009 Music

I have the music talent of William Hung. And frankly I might be insulting William Hung with that comparison. But the Elionze Group have put together a music app simple enough for even me to make music, yet powerful enough to put together some great loops, exactly how you want them.
I’m talking about FingerBeat. At first I was expecting a fairly simple finger drum app. With some apps I download and play with from the App Store, I have to lower my expectations when it comes to features. I have to remind myself that this is a cheap app often made by a single developer, or a small team in a short period of time. FingerBeat is one of the rare apps I’ve downloaded over the past few weeks that really exceeded my expectations when it came to features.

Lyrics+
Michael (Admin) | Jul 1, 2009 Music

I was planning to review a song lyrics app a while ago but it suddenly disappeared from the iTunes App Store and the developer never told me why! Oh well, no loss… Lyrics+ is far from perfect but it’s still pretty handy and has a lot of potential to become an “every day” app.
That other lyrics app was pretty run of the mill in that it would allow for searching by artist or song title. The thing that makes Lyrics+ so much more promising is that it will find, or at least try to find, the “now playing” song! There have been numerous times when I’ve been listening intently to Eminem rag on his mother but still couldn’t understand exactly how or why he wants to kill her, and I truly wished I could launch an app that would just show me the lyrics while the song is playing. That’s what this app does, and it takes just a couple of taps which is super cool.

Mike Lightman | May 7, 2009 Music

I like a few days to sit with the app before I get it all down on paper. I’ve taken a few extra days with ooTunes because frankly, the app terrified me. Yes, let me repeat – I was scared by a stack of code & some graphics. You think I’m pathetic, admit it. Well, if you witnessed the power this thing has, you wouldn’t be making fun.
On it’s own, ooTunes is arguably the most comprehensive & extensive radio app in the App Store. If you want to listen to Bulgarian Hip Hop, there’s a station for that. If you want local news from Saskatchewan, there’s a station for that. But, it’s really a misnomer to call it just a radio app. With the built-in web browser, it becomes your total streaming device. Factor in the addition of the ooTunes server for your home computer & you’ve got the a complete listening package.
Silly Songz
Michael (Admin) | Apr 8, 2009 Music

Email greeting cards have been a pretty huge industry since the day when environmental hero Al Gore invented the internet, but for some reason audio cards never really caught on. Spazzles is trying to change that, but instead of adding a personalized recording to a greeting card image, they’re adding that personalized recording to the end of a goofy song instead.
Silly Songz is a semi-schizophrenic collection of original music that’s half nice and half craaaazy, and you get to append a 15-second recording to the end of the song you choose. Some of the nice songs deliver messages like don’t be sad, get well, I love you, etc. The crazy songs are far less kind and deliver messages like you’re dumped, quit calling me, let’s golf and drink beer, and my personal favorite, “I got diarrhea”.
