This week has gotten off to a very slow start… I didn’t have time to review anything on Monday and Chris J. reviewed AlwaysOnPC yesterday, but once again I couldn’t manage to get anything posted. Dangit!! Sorry about that.

To make up for the lack of stuff, I’m gonna post a bunch of codes today! New reviews are in the works (as always) but for now here are some free copies of Silly Songz, a quirky audio greeting card app that I reviewed back in April.

Spazzles has provided a nice big stack of codes, the other half of which will be posted later today, so if you miss out on this round you’ll have another chance!

Call Global App

User rating: (39 votes, average: 2.95 out of 5)

A few months ago I needed to call a friend in Korea from my cell phone and even though I didn’t have an international calling plan I figured it couldn’t cost that much, so I dialed him up and we talked for about 10 minutes. Two weeks later I nearly crapped in my pants when I got the bill and saw that AT&T had charged me over $30 for that phone call! Groan. They literally charged me $3/minute. Bastards!

That’s never gonna happen again, though. AT&T would love for dumbasses like myself to pay them a monthly fee for an international calling plan or get raped on every overseas call I make, but starting now I’m using Call Global App whenever I feel the need to dial another country from my cell.

You’d think there would be cheaper ways to make these calls… I’m sure a lot of people will say “just use Skype” or some virtual calling card deal… but Call Global App’s rates are actually better than Skype’s and waaaayyy better than AT&T’s. Even if I had an international calling plan, AT&T would have charged me $.15/minute to call my friend’s cell in Seoul. Skype would have charged me $.08, and Call Global’s rate via their Direct Dial option was about $.07/minute.

Even better is that you get $2 of free calling when you install the app so you can take it for a test drive.

mimic: sync fb photos

The title of this app kind of says it all: mimic syncs profile photos from your Facebook friends to your contacts. Cool concept! But does it work?

mimic’s “design”, if you can call it that, is an exercise in minimalism. It’s simply a blue screen with a brief description of what the app’s about to do plus a “Connect” button, and once you provide your login info it goes right to work. I have 169 Facebook friends but I wasn’t really expecting to get 169 photos since some of my contacts on my iPhone aren’t named exactly the same way as they are on Facebook. I was, however, expecting more than 16 photos to get synced which was my grand total after mimic did its thing.

Update: IM+ Push v3.3

The folks at SHAPE Services keep on pumping out the updates and making their heavy-duty IM+ line of apps better and better! IM+ was originally reviewed here back in April when it was still on version 2.0 and now that we’re in the 3′s it supports Skype, sending video (3GS only, duh), has an in-app web browser, and does all kinds of Twitter stuff including link shrinking and retweets. Badaaaaaaaassssss.

Flit

OpusApps has put together their second offering called Flit. Flit is a new social networking concept with an interesting proposition. You have something to say, but you don’t have an audience. You’re not Ashton Kutcher, and you don’t have a million Twitter followers. Maybe you are Ashton Kutcher and you’re looking to take over every social network on the planet. Frankly, who is going to stop him?

Flit’s concept is that messages are simply thrown in the cloud for anyone to see. Except in this case, messages are pretty butterflies. Each butterfly has a color which denotes the category of the message. If I want to view a message, I tap the butterfly. Upon reading the flit, I am prompted to vote the flit up or down.

Q&F: DoGood

Ah, to be young and full of hope.  I remember being like that, before I got cynical and exhausted.

But three young college grads in Michigan are still hopeful, and they’ve created DoGood, their first iPhone app under their collective moniker of Mobil33t LLC.  Now, normally on a free app, I’d give you a few sentences about it and go on with my weekend.  But DoGood has inspired me to put in a bit more effort in the hopes that a few more of you will try out the app and be motivated to pay it forward, so to speak.

The app is pretty simple.  Every day there is a suggested “do good” task, like thanking a teacher, or use less water.  If you need some inspiration to do the “do good,” read short posts from others around the world who have done it.  If you do it, great!  Share how it made you feel or what you did, and get a running tally of all the “do goods” you do.  You can even post them to your twitter account, automatically.

It’s a simple idea, but it does reinforce the notion of one small gesture a day making a difference in the world.  And, with it right there in the palm of my hand, staring me in the face, I have to admit, I felt a little guilty if I didn’t at least try to do the daily “do good.”

If I had to make one suggestion to the Wolverines, I’d have some way to screen the feedback.  Some of it was downright raunchy (see the comments on the ‘do something you love’ DoGood), from losers who think it’s a joke.  I’d definitely rethink your “appropriate for 4+” rating until you have this filter in place.

Other than that, bravo, my fine young chaps.  I hope you change the world, one iPhone user at a time.

Update: IM+ 3.0

Whoa dude, two updates in one week! This is an important one because when I reviewed IM+ a couple months ago I was grumbling that it didn’t support Skype. Well, now it does. And it supports Twitter. And it can provide your location, although in my brief experiment the accuracy was off by a few miles.

This is still a pretty big update, though, and here’s the official word from SHAPE Services:

The most important additions in IM+ 3.0 paid version are Twitter and Skype Chat. The minor changes include an ability to create own status messages including geo-status with current location.

IM+ 3.0 lite version’s functionality (lite version is coming soon) is also significantly expanded. Besides Twitter, we’ve added the following functions which previously were available in paid version only: Send photo, Send location and Send voice.

* Note: Due to technical reasons the version number in App tore is displayed as 2.2, though it is a major update 3.0.

Kind regards,
SHAPE Services

IM+ may be pricey but that’s because it does that fancy thing where you can still receive chat messages even when the app isn’t running which dramatically raises its value for the super-wired. However, if you’re too broke to drop $10 on this app you can haul ass to the comment box and try to grab one of the free codes that SHAPE has very kindly provided!

D’Cards

I’m not the best son in the world. I’m generally a romantic, but greeting cards feel like a massive scam to me. And of course my mom LOVES her Hallmark cards. She’s of the persuasion that the sentiment isn’t fully communicated unless you give a sappy card, a funny card & something in between. OVERKILL. I was intrigued at the possibility of skipping the last minute run to the drug store and instead having that wall of sap & slush at the ready in my pocket.

In it’s current incarnation, Hallmark won’t be losing any sleep over D*Cards. But they might be wise & buy the application & the company outright.

IM+ v2.0

User rating: (4 votes, average: 4.75 out of 5)
Loading ... Loading ...

Not long ago I wrote about how awesome Nimbuzz is because it’s totally free and supports a bunch of different instant messaging platforms. Free apps like Nimbuzz and IM+ Lite provide plenty of chat functionality for very casual users, but maybe you need more than that. Maybe IM is how you stay connected to your office… maybe you’ve got hot gossip that needs spreading… or maybe you’ve just gone off the deep end and insist on being wired 24/7. Whatever your reason for wanting to be “online” even when you’re not running an IM app, IM+ v2.0 is the heavy-duty solution you’re looking for.

This constant availability is accomplished through something called “IM Push”… you can input an email address in the options panel, set “Keep IM services connected on exit” to On… and when you close IM+ you’ll remain signed in on whatever instant messengers you’re using! Go ahead… play games, lock the iPhone, do whatever. If someone tries to message you, IM Push will send you an email with the incoming chat message, and you can reply to the email as if you’re actually using a chat window.

Q&F: small talk

User rating: (2 votes, average: 5.00 out of 5)

Chat applications always have some degree of complexity to them because the makers assume you’ll want to do all kinds of crap… add friends, use emoticons, set status, go invisible, yada yada yada. And they’re right, all that fancy stuff is good and often necessary.

Frivr.com takes a drastically different approach with small talk: throw everyone into a single chat room for an anonymous free-for-all! This is a totally stripped-down chat room with no features except the ability to select your nickname and text bubble color.

I haven’t gone out and tried every single chat application out there, but that’s mostly because Nimbuzz rocks and I don’t need anything else!

If you’re looking for an all-in-one chat client, try this one out. Nimbuzz supports a ton of chat and social networking platforms and it’s easy to set up if you know your login info for each of the platforms you’re using.
