Quick Picks Fantasy GM
Michael (Admin) | Sep 10, 2009 Sports

I heart gambling and I heart football even more, so naturally I gravitated towards Quick Picks Fantasy GM the second it hit my inbox! It’s a weekly salary cap game where you re-draft your team every week so even if Tom Brady gets mowed down by a bus (perish the thought!) you won’t be screwed for 17 weeks straight like you probably were last season in your standard fantasy football league.
Not only do you get to pick a new team each week, but you can also win money doing it. That’s right… iPhone apps don’t cost money, they make money! Maybe. If you know your football. Free The Fan is giving out weekly prizes of cash and Overstock.com gift cards, plus there are some hefty cash and Overstock prizes for the overall season point leaders! In total, $10,000 in cash and prizes that will be handed out over the course of the NFL season.
It may sound easy but the salary cap is the Great Equalizer here. Is it really as simple as blowing $20 million of your $25 million cap on four studs when you have EIGHT roster spots to fill? Haha, you wish.

Fanball.com Fantasy Draft, Player & Injury News 2009
Michael (Admin) | Sep 3, 2009 Sports

If you’re a fantasy football geek you already know who Fanball.com is… they’re one of just a handful of credible fantasy news sources not named ESPN. A few weeks ago I did a three-app Draft Kit Roundup and this app from Fanball fits right in with that group; it provides player rankings, news and injury updates, and it also tries to be a live draft companion which it kind of succeeds at but not entirely.
I made it pretty clear in my Draft Kit Roundup that I think trying to track your live draft on any iPhone app is a waste of time, and even though Fanball’s app is pretty good overall I still think it’s a dumb idea! I’m in three leagues this year (as usual) and my first live draft was last night. iPhone apps like this one do have some value in a live draft setting, but mostly on the news and stats side.

Q&F: Outlast Football
Michael (Admin) | Aug 31, 2009 Quick & Free, Sports

Call me a commie but I don’t give a crap about baseball… (American) football is the only sport that matters! And now that football season is finally here I’m on the lookout for apps that will make the games even more fun to watch.
Outlast Football is your basic survival pool where each week you pick ONE team that you’re absolutely sure will win, and if you’re right then you live to see another Sunday (or Monday or occasionally Thursday). If you choose the wrong side of an upset, though, you’re done for the season. The only catch is that you can only pick a team once during the whole season, so after Chicago crushes Green Bay at Lambeau in Week 1 you’ll have to move on to other possible winners in subsequent weeks.
You can make your survival pool public or private and you can also join other public pools if making one pick a week isn’t enough for you. There’s also the option to add a point spread if you’re fully convinced that your team will win by (x) points, and you’ll either get rewarded or penalized in “LastCreds” depending on the outcome.
I don’t fully understand the point of LastCreds, aka Outlast points, but I’m guessing it’s just a way of ranking players and their knowledge (or luck) in predicting winners. As for how this app performs in the heat of battle I don’t really know yet since the NFL season hasn’t started, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough!
Outlast Football is free, so if you’re a football fan you need to download it and join my public pool! Just go to “Buddies”, click Search in the top left corner, look for “iphone” and you’ll find iPhoneAppReviews.net. Be sure to join the league called “(for real this time)”.

Version 1.0
Reviewed on iPhone 3G OS3.0.1
- Arrrgghh I can't delete my screwed up 'IAR survial pool!'... that needs to be fixed
- Outlast hasn't assigned any spreads for Week 1 yet, probably because we're still in preseason
- Join my pool! Make sure to join the one called 'for real this time'

Fantasy Football Draft Kit roundup
Michael (Admin) | Aug 7, 2009 Sports
Hey FF nerds, I missed out on the short window for fantasy football reviews last year but this time around I’m all over it! Every year I’m in at least three fantasy football leagues so I definitely have a vested interest in apps like these.
One thing I wanna say right off the bat is that all of these fantasy football apps fall into the “draft kit” category which implies that they’re intended for use during a fantasy draft so that’s how I’m treating them. They each allow you to mark players so you know if they’ve been drafted by you or someone else, each supports multiple drafts, and each one has a “my team” view.
Where to Golf
Michael (Admin) | Jun 9, 2009 Sports

Most people in the U.S. consider Memorial Day weekend to be the “official” start of summer, and since that holiday passed a week ago I guess it’s time to talk about golf! It usually takes me 3 or 4 swings to get the damn ball off the tee, but any sport you can play while drinking is ok in my book.
Where to Golf does exactly what its name implies – it tells you where to golf. It’s a comprehensive listing of just about every golf course in the U.S. and Canada with all the details you could possibly want from each… par, yardage, rating, slope, green fees, cart rental fees, grass type, the golf pro’s name, the course designer’s name, the drink cart girl’s phone number, you name it.

iGolf
Michael (Admin) | Sep 22, 2008 Sports

SGN’s iGolf claims to be “like having a driving range wherever you go”. You choose from one of three different clubs, swing your iPhone as hard as you can without hurling it at innocent bystanders, and see how far your “drive” goes.
I have to admit that iGolf is a pretty cool implementation of the iPhone’s accelerometer and, even though I’m not a golfer, it’s kind of fun to practice my “swing” on this virtual driving range. There are a few problems though… for starters, there’s really no need for three clubs since you’re going for distance and not playing an actual course (which, btw, would be so sweet but sadly that’s not what iGolf is). Of the three clubs, only the wood is of any use since I believe the other two are an iron and a wedge, neither of which can come close to the wood’s whacking power.
The other problem with iGolf is that, if you do a true golf swing, your backswing will set off the accelerometer before you bring your iPhone back down to “hit the ball”. What this means is that, after you tap the “hit” button, you have to very carefully extend your arm and then make your swinging motion in one swoop, more like you’re holding a tennis racket. You could do it with two hands on the iPhone, but it’s almost easier to get a good swing with just one.
iGolf’s graphics are nice, the sound effects are good, and if you can make peace with the way swinging has to be performed it’s probably worth installing. A word of caution though: be careful of people who want to use your virtual driving range! If you let everyone in the office take a swing on iGolf, one of your jackass coworkers will eventually throw your phone across the conference room. It’s bound to happen so don’t be shocked when it does!
- You don't really need two hands to use iGolf but it might be a good idea if you're a clumsy oaf
- "Challenge your friends" is really just an email link
- You wouldn't go to a driving range with a wedge, so don't bother doing it here
- It would be awesome if you could play an actual course, but alas this is just a one-shot driving range
- 486 yards!! Even Happy Gilmore couldn't come close to that
- Long names like "iPhoneAppReviews" get cut off entirely on the scoreboard
