The folks at Lingopal love IAR’s readers sooooo much that they’ve provided a whole mess of codes for several language-specific versions of their full-flavored phrasebook! The full version will translate 900+ phrases to and from any of 44 languages, and these language-specific version give translations for just one target language.

Today I’m posting Greek and, in honor of crazy Uncle Boris, Russian. These are the other languages that will be posted in the coming days:

Czech
French
Hebrew
Korean
Polish
Portuguese (Brazilian)
Spanish
Vietnamese
German
Japanese

If you desperately want a language that isn’t listed here, post a comment and I’ll see if Richard @ Lingopal has any codes lying around for you!

Packing Pro code correction!

Yesterday I reviewed Packing Pro and, because I have the IQ of a doorknob, I posted codes for the non-Pro version of Packing. Whoops… MY BAD!

Quinn Genzel in all his awesomeness had provided two sets of codes and I just posted the wrong one. So here’s the right one! And if you grabbed a Packing code yesterday, don’t feel bad… it’s still a great app for getting packed up.

Chrisa reviewed Packing back in March and it nearly sent her into orgasmic convulsions! Her words (kind of), not mine.

I don’t think I’m quite as obsessive-compulsive as Chrisa… I’m a single guy, after all. My typical packing ritual begins about half an hour before I’m supposed to walk out the door and usually takes about 10-15 minutes, but when I’m tossing garbage into a suitcase it’s always pretty haphazard and there have been plenty of times when I’ve figured out that I forgot something I really wanted to have with me.

Something tells me those days are over! I can see why Chrisa went so nutty over her version of Packing… this really is a great tool for anal-retentive travelers and I can even see myself using it whenever I’m about to hit the road.

If you missed out on yesterday’s app giveaway, which one user called “epic”, I still have a few apps leftover and Lingopal is one of them! I just reviewed Lingopal a few days ago and it’s pretty great as phrasebooks go… 42 languages, spoken translations, and it’s all local (as in no internet needed). Impressive!

If you miss out on these codes but are planning to be in a foreign country sometime in the foreseeable future, just buy the app – it’ll come in handy.

AT&T Navigator

AT&T Navigator is one of the first apps to fill a HUGE gap in the iPhone’s app catalog: Turn by Turn GPS navigation. This app, which is “powered by Telenav“, is one of the first apps that I know of that does not bill directly through the iTunes App Store. Instead, the monthly charge of $9.99 will appear on your AT&T bill.

Voice guided turn by turn directions are finally here!  No more hitting the “next” arrow on the Maps app while you rear-end the car in front of you.  So what is the deal with this app?  Does it deliver?  What is the experience like?  Are the directions solid?  What about the business listing database?  Real-time traffic?  How can you use this as a GPS device without multitasking (background running apps)?   Read on for the full review.

iFare Finder

iFare Finder is on sale for $1.99 until the next update… regular price is $2.99

Every once in a while I feel the need to get my ass off the couch and go somewhere far, far away, and when these feelings start to stir the first thing I want to know is how much it’s gonna run me. I don’t need an exact price down to the penny, I just need a reasonably accurate ballpark figure and, for me, this is where iFare Finder comes in handy. In theory you’re supposed to be able to actually book flights by tapping links in this app (which launch the Safari browser), but it doesn’t always work out that way.

In a heroic bid to save the world’s languages, here comes myLanguage from myLanguage.me to the rescue!  On the more plebeian side, it’s a translation app.  However you wish to tag it, it’s a very handy app for those who travel the world a fair bit or are simply otherwise exposed to different languages on a regular basis.  At it’s core, you pick the desired source and target language then enter the phrase you want translated.  Oh but there’s more…

iLove Travel – Packing

Have you seen the movie, “As Good As It Gets” with Jack Nicholson?  It’s the one where Jack plays Melvin Udall, a writer with severe OCD, but learns to overcome some aspects of it due to the love of a Brooklyn waitress and a gay neighbor.  He got nominated for an Oscar for the part.  Anyway – I like to think there’s a little obsessive-compulsive in all of us about certain aspects of our lives.  For me, it’s travel.  I travel quite a bit for business, yes, but when I travel for leisure, it’s more stressful, because I have three teenagers to pack as well as myself.  Not to mention a husband who has a short-term memory issue that I think is chromosonal in nature.  I call it X-Y Chromosone Poisoning, and its symptoms also include not being physically capable of asking directions, and not being able to watch TV without the remote firmly grasped in his hand.  I think he passed it on to my son.
