In case you hadn’t noticed, there’s now a Newsletter! link in the navigation tabs at the top of the screen… a few days ago I sent my very first weekly newsletter to IAR’s writers and it was a snapshot of about 15 apps that look promising and are waiting in our review queue this very moment.

Our writers are free to review whatever they want and last month we got 450 review requests, so I’m trying to provide some help in finding all the gems hidden in the growing junkyard that is the App Store. Keep in mind that there’s no guarantee the apps in the newsletter will get reviewed, but on the surface they look cool enough to be worth talking about.

So then I got to thinking that maybe y’all out there in the public iPhone world would like my stupid newsletter, too. Fear not, I won’t do anything evil with your email address and you can unsubscribe the moment you get sick of it so just sign up! Maybe you’ll like it?

WTF?!

Hey it’s a NEW FEATURE!

We generally try to review apps that look like they at least have potential, and once in a while we’ll toss out a Q&F review, but I think it’s time to start having some weekly fun with apps that just make you go WTF?! And that’s what WTF?! is all about… paying homage to, and when necessary making fun of, apps that are so dumb you can’t help but laugh (or cry?), or ones that are just plain out there.

WTF?! app reviews will generally be posted on Wednesdays if I manage to actually stick to the schedule I’m cobbling together, but if the other writers here want to dig up some weirdness on a different day I won’t argue!

Be sure to let us know in the comments if you think these reviews are cool or lame or whatever. Also check the sidebar for a poll soon after the first WTF?! reviews go live.

OMG!

Well apparently there are so many people trying to access the site today that the hardware just can’t keep up so I’ve doubled the RAM… *fingers crossed*

Dangit!! I shoulda seen this coming. WordPress seems to be freaking out when everybody flocks to a page to grab codes… tech support is on the case and should hopefully have a solution or at least something to ease the pain.

Please bear with me! In the meantime, let’s move on to the next app and see what happens…

One!

Let's fire this thing up!

Whoa dude… it’s been a whole year already??!!

Geez I guess so! It was one year ago today that I kicked off iPhone App Reviews.net with a short review of Cyrus Najmabadi’s Now Playing, a free app that started out as a simple movie theater guide and has since added DVD release info and Netflix support to its arsenal of movie tools.

IAR has changed, too… this used to be a lonely and somewhat pathetic one-man shop, but traffic started growing and Apple invented promo codes and before long I had assembled a crack team of app reviewers that includes Swain, Chris J., Chrisa, and T.J., to name a few. Ok T.J.’s pretty new, as in last-month new, but when he writes he just doesn’t stop!!

The IAR review team is awesome and I feel incredibly lucky to have all these iPhone-wielding wordsmiths onboard, so hey guys if you’re reading this… THANKS!!!! You guys rock in a super huge way.

And another big Thank You is in order for all you wackjobs out there who read our ramblings and keep coming back for more!!

We’re gonna spend the day celebrating with a ton of promo codes that have been very graciously donated by the developers of a whole mess of our favorite apps from the past year.

I’ll be posting them throughout the day (starting when I wake up, hopefully around 10 am Chicago time) so if you miss out on something, be sure to come back and make a grab for something else! And if you tell enough of your friends about iPhone App Reviews.net, we just might make it to Birthday #2 next year

Site traffic has grown EVERY month for the past year... thanks for making IAR such a success!

Site traffic has grown EVERY month for the past year and we even surpassed 1,000,000 pageviews... thanks for making IAR such a success!

…iPhone App Reviews.net’s first birthday! Or is it an anniversary?

Anyway, be sure to tell all your iPhone BFFs to visit tomorrow because I’ll be posting promo codes ALL. DAY. LONG!

Swain, Chris J., Chrisa, T.J., and others have brought you a lot of great reviews over the past year and tomorrow’s your big chance to get some apps that we’ve tested and adored. Put it on the calendar!

Google Reader Spam Links

If you’re reading this site’s RSS via Google Reader you’re probably seeing some very spammy links which are NOT our doing!! Eric, the random freebie guy and occasional contributor, just clued me in on this bizarre happening and I guess it’s not unique to iPhone App Reviews; it happens with other sites, too.

If anyone has tips on how to kill these links I’m all ears! Thanks in advance for imparting your collective wisdom on this really annoying subject.

Another day spent yelling at Bluehost

If you’ve had problems getting to this site over the past couple of hours it’s because Bluehost had a server problem which they supposedly fixed, then they suspended my account because it was using too many resources, and their only response was “fix it”. Several support techs I spoke with, plus the assholes in their Abuse department, took the stance that it wasn’t their job to “babysit” my website.

I finally talked to a guy in support who took 2 minutes to look at my directories and he said that a file had been hacked. I overwrote the file with a backup and the problem was fixed immediately.

It’s true that this website is my responsibility and not theirs, but their utter refusal to even attempt to provide support… which is what tech support is supposed to do, right?… just astonishes me.

I’ve said this before and now I’m saying it again: STAY AWAY FROM BLUEHOST. A handful of their people take their jobs seriously, but most couldn’t care less.

By the end of this month, iPhone App Reviews will be on a dedicated server at Pair.com which will be a huge relief.

We’re moving!

If you notice any weird site behavior, it’s because I’m working with my engineer friend to move iPhone App Reviews to a new dedicated server. Please bear with me for the next day or so while we set up a much more stable (and hopefully faster!) home for the site.

Update: I lied… the server switch hasn’t been completed yet, but it will be soon. Shared hosting is for amateurs!!

Update #2: The server move will be happening near the end of June in case you’re curious. It’s gotta be done right, and I’d prefer to do it at month end so as not to piss off the sponsors!

Thanks,
Michael
