If you missed out on yesterday’s app giveaway, which one user called “epic”, I still have a few apps leftover and Lingopal is one of them! I just reviewed Lingopal a few days ago and it’s pretty great as phrasebooks go… 42 languages, spoken translations, and it’s all local (as in no internet needed). Impressive!

If you miss out on these codes but are planning to be in a foreign country sometime in the foreseeable future, just buy the app – it’ll come in handy.

B-Day Giveaway: Pipe Mania

T.J. just reviewed Pipe Mania recently and it’s a good thing he wrote it up instead of me because I had no idea this was another classic 80s port! It was released in 1989 which was right around the time that I discovered beer, so I guess it’s not a big shocker that I missed such a huge hit.

In T.J.’s words, “If you’ve never played any version of Pipe Mania, just go buy this app now. This is a classic industry staple. You can’t go wrong.”

What else do you need to know?

If blackjack is your thing, get this app!! If there’s a more realistic Blackjack table on the iPhone I’d like to see it.

A few months after I reviewed this app last year in September, Huffington Post ran an article about how some complete jackasses were apparently using their iPhones to count cards at casinos. It’s true that 21 Pro: Blackjack includes a card counting option and a little info on it but puhhhhlease… trying to fire up an iPhone app at a blackjack table sounds about as intelligent as splitting face cards.

Pipe Mania

Razorwork’s last title ever produced was Pipe Mania for the iPhone. Unfortunately Razorworks disbanded last year after completing the project. It is especially unfortunate given how solid this port is. Robosoft now owns and sells the title.

Pipe Mania is a classic title that as been around 1989. The first version I played was called Pipe Dream. I assumed Pipe Mania was a remake/clone of Pipe Dream. I didn’t realize that Pipe Mania was actually the original title for the franchise. For those who aren’t familiar with the basic concept, You have a game board, which in this case is 10×8 squares. On each of these squares, you can place a piece of pipe. There is a queue of pipes on the left and you must place them in the order they appear randomly. The pipes must go together in one contiguous piece.

Flashback

Flashback from Manomio LLC is a port of the much-beloved Amiga action platformer from 1992 by Delphine Software Int’l.  Delphine created some of the greatest Amiga games ever including Future Wars, Cruise for a Corpse and most especially Another World (Out of this World in the US) but let me not get off track.  The version of Flashback presented here is somewhat unique in that it’s not a port per se but a rebuild of the original executable using the REminiscence engine, compiled for the iPhone OS.  The catch is that all the original art assets are needed to make the game work.  Before you scream ‘copyright violation’ just relax; the developer contacted what what remains of Delphine and they expressed no desire to enforce ownership of the IP.  Therefore the assets can be legally distributed as ‘abandonware’.  Anyway the notable side effect of that is when you buy the game from the app store all you download is said executable; on first launch it goes out to one such abandonware site and downloads all the assets.  Be aware that this can take a long time so be on WiFi when you run it for the first time.  I didn’t get round to reviewing this game right away and because of that the 1.1 update was since released which is what I’m now reviewing.  That’s a very notable thing as 1.0 was fairly universally panned for it’s poor presentation, control layout and actual game-stopping bug on the game’s 2nd level.  The 1.1 update addresses all these things and more so kudos to the developer for taking the criticism constructively and trying to give the public the best product possible.

Glandarius Wing Strike

If you’re into shmups you should take a good look at Glandarius Wing Strike! It’s a little frantic, there’s tons of shooting, and there’s definitely no shortage of targets to beat down.

Probably the most unique thing about Glandarius is the control scheme… you can literally play this game with one finger. Tap to the left or right of your little fighting vessel and it’ll speed over in that direction while spitting out a whole lotta bullets, and for smaller movements you can simply drag the finger a little. In a way, one-finger control is pretty cool because it means you can play just about anytime, anywhere as long as you have a free hand. At the same time, though, this control scheme also restricts your ship to left and right movements which is kind of limiting in the gameplay department.

Underworlds

When a game like Underworlds from Pixel Mine Inc gets released, life is good.  I’ve been waiting for an action RPG in the same vein as Diablo on this platform for months and now it’s finally here.  Be assured though, this is no clone but an original creation from the ground up, designed exclusively for the iPhone.  The game posits you as a scrub guard for a travelling caravan headed up by old man McTavish.  On a routine stop in the town of Albrect, mysterious attacks on the townspeople inspire you to lend your righteous blade to the cause.

Sally’s Spa

Sally’s Spa is on sale for $2.99 until April 30th.
Regular price is $4.99

I AM NOT A MAN! I don’t chug beer, I don’t light my farts, and I don’t scratch myself in full view of the entire world… at least not while I’m frantically giving manicures and facials in this strangely addicting casual game called Sally’s Spa.

As Sally, your job is to pull your friend’s struggling spa business out of the crapper and build it into a little empire, and to do this you need to be in 20 places at once as customers make their way through the various treatment stations the spa offers. Games Cafe, Inc. categorizes Sally’s Spa as a “time management” game which is a lot more fun than it sounds, but this game is also about knowing your customers, just like a real business. Some customers are big tippers who are short on patience, and the longer they have to wait for attention the smaller their tip gets. Others are lousy tippers who don’t mind waiting, and remembering who’s who can get a little nerve-wracking when you’ve got a full house.

Gems 3D

A day late and a dollar short.  Too little, too late.  Late to the party.  Someone left the cake out in the rain.  Whatever idiom you choose, it applies to Gems 3D from Max Fomitchev (aka Ultramax).  This is another ‘match 3′ game that tries to provide a fresh take; the need for each gem to have a clear path (like a maze) to the spot you want it to go.  Beyond that, it’s match the like gems so they disappear, you score some points, more gems randomly drop in, rinse and repeat.  The sole ‘powerup’ is called a trick which allows you to turn any gem wild as long as it forms a match.  One nice feature is you can also form matches on a diagonal.  The game provides some unusual music which was composed by the author; a mix of classical and techno.
