Q&F: Roadkill Cafe
Michael (Admin) | Oct 12, 2009 Games, Quick & Free

Roadkill Cafe is on sale for *free*! Normal price is $.99 – $1.99
I confess that I’ve only spent about 15 minutes playing this game, but I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say drop what you’re doing and get Roadkill Cafe right now while it’s still free!
It’s funny, it’s gross, it’s well produced, and on top of all that it’s four games in one. The main game has you driving around an odd looking roadkill-scooping-vehicle, and you need to pick up all the dead animals that are constantly getting smushed in traffic so you can deliver them to the cafe where hungry customers are waiting!
In Survivor mode you simply have to dodge traffic for as long as possible, Vengeance is very similar but instead you’re dodging chickens, and in Rampage you’re driving along a Spy Hunter-ish highway where you have to mow down as much roadkill as you can while also avoiding collisions with other cars.
Roadkill Cafe respects the iPod, has global high score boards, and comes with three different control schemes (choosing one is a game in itself) and even if you miss out on this sale I’d say go for it if you’re in the mood for something new! I don’t think there are hours and hours of gameplay here, but it’s still a very good game for just a buck or two.

App Sale: Marine Sharpshooter
Michael (Admin) | Oct 8, 2009 App Sale Alert, Games

Get this while it’s still free! Groove Media dropped the price for Marine Sharpshooter to zero on Saturday, and their sale prices never seem to last very long. Regular price on this game is $1.99.
Marine Sharpshooter puts you behind the scope of a really big gun as you try to pick off bad guys before they wack you good. It’s a sniper game with both story and arcade modes, and of course you also get to choose your weapon; some rifles are weak but can be fired fast, while others pack more punch but need more time before another shot can be fired.
Moving around and finding targets can be a little difficult, and one time when I was about to blow someone’s brains out the game mysteriously kicked me back to the beginning of the level I was on, but this is still a high quality game with great graphics and pretty decent gameplay. I’d probably be willing to pay $2 for it, and for nothing it’s a no-brainer if you enjoy murdering people!

Ship Creek
Michael (Admin) | Oct 7, 2009 Games

I’ve never met Scott Moakes, but I can already tell that he’s either a down-home country boy and/or a dude with a wacky sense of humor!
Ship Creek is a hilariously low-tech sea combat game where your badly-drawn battleship is being assaulted from all directions by equally rough-looking enemies against a crumpled paper backdrop. Your mission is to fight off planes, hot air balloons, and other boats with an unlimited supply of scribbled dots, I mean, ammo, as they bombard you with bombs and more scribbles.
The really funny thing about this game is the sound… background music is a very backwoods banjo track, and everything else was clearly produced by a couple of guys who are mouthing their own sound effects the same way 10 year old boys do when they’re crashing toys into each other.
Breakspin
Michael (Admin) | Sep 23, 2009 Games

I generally like to review apps made by smallish, independent developers cuz I figure corporate mega-giants don’t really need any help getting publicity, but some apps just look too damn cool to pass up.
Breakspin is Walt Disney’s entry in the App Store’s massive Games category and it’s impressive to say the least! Thankfully there are no cartoon mice or ducks or dogs to be seen anywhere in this app; it’s an exercise in straight-up arcade gaming that you probably wouldn’t expect from The Magic Kingdom yet here it is. Breakspin is a little like Pong and a little like Breakout, and the level of gloss this game sports is pretty incredible.
Q&F: Space Shooter

Invasion of the Upside Down Batteries!
Off to a slow start here after a long weekend so, while I’m finishing up a couple of other reviews, go and amuse yourself with Space Shooter!
If there was a contest for the simplest arcade shmup on the planet, this game by Dokimi would win hands down. Drag left and right across the bottom of the screen to move your “spaceship”, and tap aroud elsewhere to shoot the evil geometric shapes that mean to do you harm.
I had the entire thing beat on my first try (yes, levels are limited) and it took all of 10 minutes! But whoop-dee-doo, who gives a bibble, gabba gabba hey! It’s free, give it a try. Oh, and extra credit to whoever can identify the quote I just threw down.

iNinja
Michael (Admin) | Aug 11, 2009 Games

You know those console fighting games like Tekken and Soul Caliber where you’re just madly pressing buttons without knowing what will really happen but it seems to work so you keep on doing it? iNinja’s gameplay is just a tiny bit like that except instead of pressing buttons you’re frantically swiping your fingers this way and that and, somehow, you manage to knock out the ninjas who are flying all over the screen.
iNinja arms you with throwing stars and nunchuks for beating down wave after wave of flying ninjas and, depending on the game mode, UFOs. The controls are simple enough… swipe upward with one finger to throw a star, hold down a bit to gain power and then swipe to really fling that star as hard as you can, and use two fingers to swing the chuks like an out-of-control moron.
B-Day Giveaway: Golden Miner
Michael (Admin) | Jul 30, 2009 Games

It’s funny, the first app from Colorme Info Tech was a very elegant Chinese art scroll, and then they kind of blew me away with Golden Miner.
Golden Miner is a classic flash game that’s been floating around the internet for years now and it’s a pretty fun time waster. If you miss out on these promo codes, just play the flash game below! It’s not made by the same company that created this iPhone app, but the two are nearly identical in gameplay.
Golden Miner is a quality game, and $1 is a total bargain to have this game in your pocket.

Leaf Bound
T.J. Brumfield | Jul 17, 2009 Games

Not many people know, but Mario was originally called Jumpman in Donkey Kong. Later he became the Italian plumber we all know and love. There was another classic game called Jumpman back in 1983. Well, Leaf Bound is here with a girl named Yuri who would like to inherent the Jumpman crown. All Yuri does is jump. She jumps when she breathes. She jumps when she sleeps. And when she wants to jump, she jumps some more.
I think you get the point. In this game, you don’t even have to do anything to jump. Jumping is a given. It is inherent, and intrinsic law of the Leaf Bound universe. All you do is swipe your finger from left to right to control the direction Yuri is jumping in. Along the way there are Mecha-Monkeys. And if there are Mecha-Monkeys, it is also inherent that there will be Mecha-Monkey Mayhem. You learn to expect such behavior from robotic primates.

Pipe Mania
T.J. Brumfield | Jul 16, 2009 Games

Razorwork’s last title ever produced was Pipe Mania for the iPhone. Unfortunately Razorworks disbanded last year after completing the project. It is especially unfortunate given how solid this port is. Robosoft now owns and sells the title.
Pipe Mania is a classic title that as been around 1989. The first version I played was called Pipe Dream. I assumed Pipe Mania was a remake/clone of Pipe Dream. I didn’t realize that Pipe Mania was actually the original title for the franchise. For those who aren’t familiar with the basic concept, You have a game board, which in this case is 10×8 squares. On each of these squares, you can place a piece of pipe. There is a queue of pipes on the left and you must place them in the order they appear randomly. The pipes must go together in one contiguous piece.

Crime Spree
Michael (Admin) | Jul 7, 2009 Games

I like crime, and I like going on sprees of various sorts, so it’s only natural that Crime Spree caught my attention, plus I was interested in seeing what Skyworks could do with a non-sports title since my only exposure to their work had been through Arcade Bowling, 3 Point Hoops, and Field Goal Frenzy.
Crime Spree isn’t quite as glamorous as the name sounds, but it’s still a pretty good time killer that has the potential to get you hooked in the same way Pac Man had people hooked 25 years ago. In fact I’m sure there’s a much better comparison to be made here than Pac Man, but right now that’s all I got… Crime Spree is kind of like Pac Man. There are major differences of course, one being that you’re controlling a car instead of a ball that eats smaller balls, but this game definitely has the feel of some old skool arcade action.
Light Wars
Michael (Admin) | Jun 3, 2009 Games

I’m SHMUP CRAZY!!!! At least it seems that way lately after writing about shoot ‘em ups iFighter, Glandarius Wing Strike, and now Light Wars.
Of the three, Light Wars is by far the simplest with its less-is-more vector graphics approach. It kind of feels like a variation on Asteroids with the glowing grid arena style of Tron, and everything gets tied together in a very Playstation-like way with left and right analog controls.
Edit: I’ve never played Geometry Wars, but according to reviewers in the App Store, Light Wars is just like it :P
Don’t be fooled by the outward simplicity, though… underneath the minimalistic skin of this game is a pretty kickass gaming experience complete with all kinds of powerups, enemies of varying strengths, and other shmup standards such as shields to keep you from dying and bombs for obliterating everything in sight.
