Earlier this summer I gave everyone a run-through of Tips & Tricks – iPhone Secrets, an iPhone cheatsheet of sorts. It lays out a whole mess of iPhone functionality that a lot of casual users are clueless on and a few things that even the most hardcore iPhone nerds probably don’t know.
Since then we’ve seen the release of the iPhone 3GS and the release of OS3.0, so naturally the folks at Intelligenti Publishing got to work and nearly doubled the number of geeky iPhone secrets from 38 to 70. They were even nice enough to label the tips with little icons that tell you if you’re looking at something that’s improved in 3.0, done differently in 3.0, or completely new in the latest iPhone firmware.

I think I’m a pretty hardcore iPhone user – I mean, I run several iPhone-related websites for crying out loud! – so when flipping through this ebook I wasn’t really expecting to learn anything new. I figured it would tell you how to do a screenshot, how to save battery life by shutting off 3G, yadda yadda yadda. Tips & Tricks - iPhone Secrets does cover all of the most basic things that most of us already know, but I was pretty surprised to find several items that were genuinely new to me.
Truth is you could probably find all the info contained in this app by googling and reading your iPhone owner’s manual, but (a) you probably have better things to do with your life than spend hours to save $.99, and (b) you’ve probably lost or tossed your owner’s manual by now.

It’s a little late to be reviewing this one since the movie’s been in theatres for three weeks already, but it’s still #1 at the box office so what the hell.
The Dark Knight: HaHaHa is obviously one of those marketing stunts that’s supposed to “engage the consumer with the brand” and that’s exactly what it does. Know what else it does? It pisses the consumer off when the app misbehaves and doesn’t let you put your Joker face in the right spot!
When I first installed this app you couldn’t use an existing photo from an album, there was no undo or rotate, and I’m not even sure if resize was possible. Warner Bros. figured out that their marketing ploy was tanking due to a crappy product, so they released an update and addressed those issues. They even included instructions! Good move.
The problem that I, and apparently many others, have had is getting the app to let me put the graphics in the right place before it becomes a permanent fixture on the photo. It’s strange, like sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes it’s just impossible. It’s almost like it depends on how greasy my fingertips are or something.
If you’ve installed this app and can’t get it to work, try washing your hands. If that doesn’t work, try rubbing your fingertips on a greasy forehead, preferably your own. Try whatever you can to change the surface of your fingertips because that’s the only explanation I can come up with for why it works so sporadically. When it does work, it can be kind of fun to deface otherwise boring pictures.
Also, if you’re still clueless on how to resize and rotate, here’s a quick guide:
- Choose your graphic and hold one finger on the photo so the graphic appears
- Add a second finger to resize
- Add a third finger to rotate
Three fingers moving in different directions can be tough to maneuver, and so far the best combination I’ve come up with (while holding iPhone in hand) is 1st finger: index finger, 2nd finger: other hand’s thumb, 3rd finger: middle finger next to the index finger. If you’re right handed, you’d have 2 fingers from your right hand and your left thumb on the pic. If your iPhone is laying on a flat surface, then two index fingers is easier. You’ll also want to be sure you remove the fingers one at a time, reverse order (remove 3rd, 2nd, then 1st finger).
Soon this app will be obsolete, but at least now you (hopefully) will be able to Joker-ize some of your friends while Batman still has some buzz left.
