App Sale: BoXiKoN
Michael (Admin) | Dec 14, 2009 App Sale Alert, Games

BoXiKoN is on sale for free – normally $.99

The backgrounds change as you level up
Puzzle fiends, get this app now! BoXiKoN is a little like Tetris, except instead of trying to fit pieces together as they fall, you have to drag them from the bottom of the screen into the main puzzle area. Pieces waiting to be used will rotate in place until you drag them to wherever it is you think they should go.
There’s no right or wrong way to stick the puzzle pieces together, but the trick is to do it efficiently enough that you don’t wind up with pieces that don’t fit anywhere. When all of the squares at the bottom fill up with unusable pieces, it’s Game Over.
I’d easily pay $1 for this game, so if you like puzzles then right now is the time to grab this one.
App Sale: Billionaire
Michael (Admin) | Dec 2, 2009 App Sale Alert, Games

Billionaire is on sale for free – normally $.99
If you like Tetris, then I think there’s a good chance you’ll like Billionaire… it’s pretty similar, but instead of trying to fit blocks together you’re basically doing a match 3 thing where you have to match up falling jewels.
The action is a little slower than I’m used to for this kind of game, but it’s tricky enough that you’ll eventually appreciate the moderately lazy pace at which the gems are falling. Shen Marshall has built in a good set of options that allow you to adjust game control, background, music, and a couple other game attributes.
At this game’s normal price of a buck I’d say that’s about right, but it’s even better when it’s free! If you miss out on the sale, there’s also a free lite version.
App Sale: Yumsters 2
Michael (Admin) | Nov 19, 2009 App Sale Alert, Games

Yumsters! 2 is on sale for free – normally $.99-$1.99
Yumsters are crazy about fruit and music! Yeah, who isn’t. Yumsters! 2 is one of those match 3 games that’s won awards and has apparently gained a big following in its PC incarnation. There’s a whole story about how these cute Yoshi-looking creatures won some kind of singing contest and are now traveling the world, but all you really need to know is that they hang out in holes and eat fruit and they have really long necks.
To play, you just stretch the Yumsters’ super long necks across fruit of the same color. Eating just one fruit is ok, but to get the points and clear the levels you need to stretch them across multiple fruits which is a lot more efficient. There are powerups to grab along the way and, of course, things get pretty hairy after you clear the first few of the 64 levels that take you around the world to places like Hawaii, Rome, and Japan. I guess this game isn’t truly a match 3, but it kind of fits the genre.
G5 Entertainment definitely put a lot of elbow grease into this app which is easily worth the $1-$2 asking price it normally commands, but for the next few days it’s free! Sweet deal.

App Sale: Styx Halloween
Michael (Admin) | Oct 29, 2009 Games

Styx Halloween is was on sale for free – apparently the price has gone back up to $2.99

The further you go, the more different kinds of Halloween faces you have to contend with
Styx Halloween is one of those match 3 games where you run your finger across matching units that are either touching or diagonal from each other. I guess that technically makes it a “match as many as you can” game and the combination of great graphics and tons of powerups makes this a pretty fun Halloween diversion!
The game comes with three modes: Chains, Time Trial, and Puzzle. Chains and Time Trial are both very similar in that your goal is to find as many chains as possible, and Puzzle forces you to figure out how to eliminate groups of Halloween icons in the right order so that no individual pieces are leftover.
EMV Software built in a global scoreboard and made Styx Halloween iPod-friendly, so I’d advise you to go get this app while it’s still free! The App Store page says this game is on sale for 2 days only, and the price went down 2 days ago, so it may go back to its original $2.99 price any minute now.

App Sale: Spheric
Michael (Admin) | Oct 27, 2009 App Sale Alert, Games

When the sphere gets this full you're totally screwed!
Spheric is on sale for free – normal price is $.99-$1.99
Need a little more aggravation in your life? Spheric delivers! It’s a pretty tough match 3 puzzle (match 4, actually) where your job is to line up like-colored marbles next to each other by spinning them around a circular playing field. The field starts off pretty empty, and as it fills up by virtue of your mistakes the game gets harder and harder. When the sphere is completely filled with marbles it’s Game Over, Man.
The trick is to use the accelerometer and in-game gravity to create gaps in the right places so that, when a new marble shoots itself at the edge of the circle, it gets shot into the right place. If you wind up getting the marbles all mixed up it’s pretty hard to fix, and therein lies the frustration that comes with this puzzler.
My terrible explanation of this game makes it sound harder than it is, but when you play Spheric yourself you’ll catch on pretty quick. I’m not sure what’s up with the low two-star App Store rating… it’s a good game even for a buck or two and it’s currently free, so if you like this kind of challenge you should grab it immediately!

B-Day Giveaway: Pipe Mania
Michael (Admin) | Jul 30, 2009 Games

T.J. just reviewed Pipe Mania recently and it’s a good thing he wrote it up instead of me because I had no idea this was another classic 80s port! It was released in 1989 which was right around the time that I discovered beer, so I guess it’s not a big shocker that I missed such a huge hit.
In T.J.’s words, “If you’ve never played any version of Pipe Mania, just go buy this app now. This is a classic industry staple. You can’t go wrong.”
What else do you need to know?

B-Day Giveaway: Wordulous
Michael (Admin) | Jul 30, 2009 Games

Aww crap, I forgot to spell out C-R-A-P
Pay no attention to the one star rating! Again, my iPhone says one thing, but iTunes says Wordulous has 37 ratings that average out to 4 stars which sounds much more realistic.
Someone at 99Games is obviously a word junkie and knows how these games are supposed to work. WordsWorth is great, and Wordulous is another game that’s done right!
I’m always wince a little when the girl nerd on the title screen “welcomes” me to the game, but after that it’s smooth sailing with this very reasonably price $1 app.

B-Day Giveaway: WordsWorth
Michael (Admin) | Jul 30, 2009 Games

Just like in Scabble, you can't spell out the acronym for Cannabalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers
There are lots of games like WordsWorth, but the thing to know about this version is that it’s really well done. I’m way too stupid to be good at this word game, but it’s a fun game and can get pretty addicting if you’re a card-carrying Word Nerd.
There’s a whole lotta gameplay here for a dollar if you’re up for it! And there are even Spanish, French, Italian, and German versions for you crazy multilingual types.

B-Day Giveaway: The Enigma Machine
Michael (Admin) | Jul 30, 2009 Games

There must be a million word games out there, and The Enigma Machine is one that’s pretty unique… and I’m pretty sure it’s the only one that’s based on Nazi war technology!
Matthew McConaughey, Jon Bon Jovi, and Harvey Keitel all know how it works because they captured one in the movie U-571, but in case you don’t it’s basically a word cipher thing that decrypts messages. Guess at the solution and the Enigma Machine will tell you how many characters you have correct until you solve it. Fun, addictive, and frustrating!
Also be sure to read the amazing story of how Crude Games got its name. You have to read ALL of it down to the very last line to truly appreciate the tale!

Hint Sprint – The Rhyming Word Game!
Michael (Admin) | Jul 29, 2009 Games

Hey, can you guess what Hint Sprint is? Well duh, it’s right there in the title… it’s a rhyming word game!
The game is 3rd-grade simple: come up with two rhyming words that fit the hint you’re given. In fact, it’s so simple that I can sit here and make up a new puzzle right off the top of my head:
Hint: What I love doing in crowded elevators every chance I get
Solution: Pass Gas
See? It’s that easy!
