Invaders World Tour

If you’re old enough to have loved (and possibly still love) Space Invaders and Galaxian, then Invaders World Tour should bring back some nice, greasy, zit-faced memories!

MeYuMe’s old-school arcade revival combines elements from two of gaming history’s most classic titles… bug-eyed aliens line up across the sky in nicely organized formations, and some of the aliens will occasionally fly down to try and kick your ass. Your little spaceship guy at the bottom of the screen is accelerometer-controlled, meaning that you have to tilt left and right to keep it from getting blown up, and just like in Space Invaders you get three shield barriers to hide behind when things get too hot to handle. Shooting the aliens down is as easy as tapping anywhere on the screen. The “World Tour” part of the game comes in the form of different backdrops for each stage that represent various locales like USA, Canada, France, and England. If you fail to clear a stage, the place you’re defending gets blown to bits by those naughty aliens.

Elven Chronicles

As you can probably tell by the name, Elven Chronicles is all medieval with swords and dragons and spells and all that. It’s an RPG, and if you’re a big enough nerd to automatically know that an RPG is a role-playing game then this is may be something you could sink your teeth into. People who have already compared it to Zelda and Final Fantasy are right on in some respects… it’s a little like old school Zelda (but better!) in the graphics department and similar to Final Fantasy in that it features turn-based battles, but whether or not you go ga-ga for this game will depend on what kind of RPG’er you are and that’s something I’ll get into later.

Every RPG is set against a storyline backdrop, and in this one you play the role of Rogan, a young stud who wakes up after being ambushed by bad guys. Apparently it’s your lucky day because you’re being cared for by a hot elf girl named Jada and, if it were me, I’d probably sit around drinking ale all day and let the world go to hell. Luckily for mankind, though, Rogan is waaaaay more noble than I am so he and the lady elf immediately go off and start completing quests handed to them by the locals. Obtain these items, defeat that monster, become a Level (x) badass, that kind of thing.

Drool Radio

Call me crazy, but internet radio is pretty much the same no matter where you’re getting it. The content, that is… it’s the same! With the exception of apps like Pandora and Boombox that let you personalize your own “station”, straight-up internet radio is always just internet radio.  There’s a gazillion internet radio stations out there, and it seems like there are just as many internet radio iPhone apps. So what makes one different from the other?

The answer is partially in features, but in my mind it’s mostly in the app’s style, just like if you’re buying an actual radio at a store. Do you want the radio that looks cool and has high-quality components, or do you want the one that looks like a cheap piece of crap? Drool Radio is the one that looks cool. It’s very retro, very slick, and has just about everything you could ask for in a pure internet radio app.

B-Day Giveaway: Pipe Mania

T.J. just reviewed Pipe Mania recently and it’s a good thing he wrote it up instead of me because I had no idea this was another classic 80s port! It was released in 1989 which was right around the time that I discovered beer, so I guess it’s not a big shocker that I missed such a huge hit.

In T.J.’s words, “If you’ve never played any version of Pipe Mania, just go buy this app now. This is a classic industry staple. You can’t go wrong.”

What else do you need to know?

Is it just me or is it both funny and ironic that retro gaming is so popular on the world’s most advanced piece of mobile hardware?? Swain had a blast with Rogue Touch back in February, and if you have an appetite for 80s classics then you probably will, too!

Archon

Archon from React Games is a faithful remake of the absolutely iconic 1983 8-bit classic from that bygone era when Atari and Commodore computers were bonafide ’high end’ gaming machines.  I played Archon and Archon II obsessively on my beloved Commodore 64 and the reward today is vivid memories of solidly trouncing my friends that’s simply priceless…truly the Golden Age of game design back in the old 80′s.  Archon’s foundation is the ancient game of Chess but really it takes the concept into some wild space far beyond.  In fact, Archon is so cool, another of its influences was the scene from Star Wars where R2-D2 and Chewie are playing a holographic chess-like battle game on the Falcon and what kid didn’t just love that scene back in ’77???

Flashback

Flashback from Manomio LLC is a port of the much-beloved Amiga action platformer from 1992 by Delphine Software Int’l.  Delphine created some of the greatest Amiga games ever including Future Wars, Cruise for a Corpse and most especially Another World (Out of this World in the US) but let me not get off track.  The version of Flashback presented here is somewhat unique in that it’s not a port per se but a rebuild of the original executable using the REminiscence engine, compiled for the iPhone OS.  The catch is that all the original art assets are needed to make the game work.  Before you scream ‘copyright violation’ just relax; the developer contacted what what remains of Delphine and they expressed no desire to enforce ownership of the IP.  Therefore the assets can be legally distributed as ‘abandonware’.  Anyway the notable side effect of that is when you buy the game from the app store all you download is said executable; on first launch it goes out to one such abandonware site and downloads all the assets.  Be aware that this can take a long time so be on WiFi when you run it for the first time.  I didn’t get round to reviewing this game right away and because of that the 1.1 update was since released which is what I’m now reviewing.  That’s a very notable thing as 1.0 was fairly universally panned for it’s poor presentation, control layout and actual game-stopping bug on the game’s 2nd level.  The 1.1 update addresses all these things and more so kudos to the developer for taking the criticism constructively and trying to give the public the best product possible.

StuntCopter

StuntCopter from nerdgames is basically a direct port of a classic Mac game from 1987 by Duane Blehm (who passed away some years ago).  The gameplay consists of flying a copter around with a stuntman hanging from the skids.  Your job is to drop him at the right moment so he lands on a passing horse-drawn hay wagon.  Contact with anything other than hay means a life lost (you can earn more as you progress).  Clouds that roll by serve to slow his fall.  Copter control is via accelerometer and a touch to the screen sends him earthward.  The game is incredibly basic so if you’re up for a dirt-simple pickup game or just nostalgic for the original you might find it worth a buck.  Personally I feel the game would be better off free but I can understand the desire to at least make a little something for the effort.  Check the comments area for a couple promo codes!
