Band Boss ($0.99) by Jack Herbert

Available on iPhone only

Ok… either Band Boss is a really good game, or I’m just incredibly bored! It’s probably a little of both. I mean, I’ve been sitting here for literally 4 hours playing this damn game and I don’t even like these so-called “simulations”. The simulations I hate are those games where you build an “army” and “attack” people but it’s all text based and there’s a lot of waiting around. Band Boss is definitely a simulation and it’s pretty much all text, but instead of commanding an army you’re managing a band and, unlike other games in this genre, it keeps things simple so you can focus on the task at hand which is your band’s success.

You get to choose from actual (albeit small and relatively unknown) bands to manage or you can make up your own, and then it’s up to you to make them popular and rich. I don’t know a thing about the music biz, but apparently popularity is gained by releasing new music (which costs money) and money is made by touring (during which you can’t release new music, thereby eroding your popularity). If you know what the hell you’re doing, you’ll be able to strike a balance that will gradually turn your group of losers into mega-rich superstars.

Zombie Life

Zombie Life (Free) by The PlayForge

Available on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad

Zombie Life is one of those cute, cartoony, Sims-like games where your purpose is to live vicariously through your title character which, in this case, happens to be a zombie. Keep your zombie happy, free of decay, gainfully employed, and complete the “quests” that gradually become available, and you’ll get to unlock new occupations and wardrobes and whatnot that will make your little undead pal’s life that much more exciting.

This is a really well done game that proves The PlayForge has some top-level talent on their payroll, but in all honesty games like this bore me to tears! Is it because I’m almost 40 and this genre seems mostly aimed at gum-snapping teenagers? Yeah, probably.

But I will say this for Zombie Life: it’s funny. Not in a LOL kind of way, but more in a :) kind of way. The characters, the writing, the overall design… funny! And cute.

Brunswick Pro Bowling

Serious bowlers know who Brunswick is… their name is all over every bowling alley on the planet. And now their name is all over a pretty incredible bowling app that’s already made a name for itself on the PS2, PSP, and Wii.

Brunswick Pro Bowling for iPhone is so packed with features it’s hard to know where to start… choose your player, choose your ball, choose your locale, choose motion control or finger control, choose your throwing angle… I think my head’s gonna explode! Ok seriously, this app is pretty insane. It’s not flashy and colorful like Gameloft’s Midnight Bowling (which I’ve never played, just going off the screenshots), but the production quality is definitely top-shelf and the gameplay is 100% what you want from an iPhone bowling game.

RC Heli – Indoor Racing

I’ve always wanted a radio-controlled helicopter! They just seem so full of possibilities, like having an oversized pet insect to fly around the house, but after flying a virtual chopper around in RC Heli I’m pretty sure that if I had a real one I’d just wind up destroying my walls and/or taking a rotor blade in the face.

Ethervision’s RC Heli – Indoor Racing is a really well done RC helicopter simulator that comes with free flight and race modes, a nice suburban house to fly around in, and there’s also a great tutorial that teaches you how to control the two joysticks that move your aircraft to and fro. Be warned though… controlling pitch and yaw is a lot harder than working a steering wheel and gas pedal! I suppose this is probably because most of us have never tried it before in real life, but with some practice even a total moron will get it eventually.

I’m a sucker for cute cartoon girls! T.J. reviewed Ranch Rush less than two weeks ago and had some fun helping Sara and Jim save their ranch from being taken over by corporate bastards.

Great production values can be hard to come by for $2 so if you’re into farm girls and multitasking this one should be a no-brainer!

Ranch Rush

My mother is addicted to playing Farm Town on Facebook these days. As I was downloading Ranch Rush from FreshGames, my thoughts immediately turned to games like Farm Town and Harvest Moon. Both those titles have mass appeal, but I find playing both to be a chore. Thankfully Ranch Rush turned out to be a different kind of beast.

Sure, this is a farm simulator in the strictest sense. You plant crops, harvest them, and run a farm. However gameplay is not open-ended, nor very time consuming. The story of the game centers on Sara and Jim, who have eight weeks to save their business. Sara gets the idea of starting a farmer’s market to raise the necessary funds. If she can’t raise the money in eight weeks, greedy developers take over Jim’s Flower Nursery where they both work.

The Sims 3

If you’ve never played The Sims before, it’s a strangely addictive game where your job is to control the lives of little digital people. They’re not sitting ducks like the islanders in Pocket God… instead they live in houses, like normal people. They also have friends, enemies, personalities, jobs, stomachs to fill, and bladders to empty, and you’re responsible for ALL of it!

Veterans of The Sims game franchise know these responsibilities all too well, and if you’re one of those people you’ll be happy to know that Electronic Arts has done a pretty kickass job of translating the Sims world to the iPhone. There are lots of differences between PC Sims and iPhone Sims, the most noticeable change being that you only control one Sim on the iPhone as opposed to an entire family, but the core of the gameplay is definitely there. Your Sim can meet other Sims, talk with them, make out with them, slap them around, pee on the floor… you name it.
